I listened to a Rogan podcast today, with Bobby Azarian (a neuroscientist who I never heard of before).

His podcast is at its best when he has scientists on there, the hate on here is overblown.

I find Joe Rogan to be a fool thats undeserving of the amount of political influence he has. I dont understand how people trust everything he says. I know people that were going to get vaccinated until Rogan convinced them not to.

Yes! You do actually have a responsibility to push back on people using your platform to spout falsehoods!

To hastily make a metaphor here: if someone is using your wi-fi to download illegal images, that's not necessarily your fault, but you can't just let it happen.

The dude is basically running a tabloid podcast. He's the podcast version of the stupid Weekly World News rag that used to be at the supermarket.

Agreed. And, like I said, that's why I don't listen to his podcast, nor use Spotify.

All he's doing is putting the show out there, it's on the audience to either listen or not.

He platformed an AIDS denier who once convinced an African leader to ignore the AIDS epidemic. That decision lead to some millions of deaths. Same asshole came on Rogan's show to spread conspiracies about covid.

It's not just "entertainment" when millions of people who listen to it make critical medical decision in the middle of a pandemic based on conspiracy wackos he thinks are "entertaining".

It's not some secret that Rogan's audience is full of paste eaters. He's still making the decisions about what information to put in front of them.

Problem with people like Rogan and Alex Jones isn't that they start out right wing, it's that they start out as unabashed conspiracy theorists, which leads to having a fan base that tends to be ultra religious / doomsday cultists / anarchists etc and many of those people are far right by virtue of talking in a small echo chamber of individuals who spread misinformation uncritically, which inevitably leads to fascist theology.

Medical quackery has a similar pathway where inevitably it leads to anti-vax rhetoric by virtue of essentially having the exact same fan base between the two.

I dont really give a shit what he is, the people he regularly gives platforms to, in addition to the information he peddles (often, without vetting) are much bigger problems than who he votes for

And that's the Crux of the issue. He uses the argument that his viewers can go fact check things, while not acknowledging that his viewers often don't even have the requisite training or knowledge necessary to distinguish proper fact checking from quackery.

But that doesn't absolve them of the need to stop it once they are made aware of the problem.

He always came across as libertarian to me. Which is effectively part of the GOP at this point. I'm not sure if he falls in that, but it's dumb to pretend like that's a shocking conclusion for others to come to. A good portion of his audience views that as a positive.

I disagree. I believe that if you do become big enough that you gain such an outsized sphere of influence like Joe Rogan that you 100% should be responsible with it, because it isn't about you anymore.
