From what I could tell, the only new place it let me go before doing that was the western path from the start of the desert, but literally every enemy down there was level 40+. I still did some exploring and got a container, some husks, and ether channels, but eventually every pathway looked a bit too tight to easily avoid enemies and I went back. I did get a message one time on a completely unrelated quest that said "This quest will be required to progress the main story", so there's probably going to be a wall at some point. As for Ether...I just stopped grabbing current for the moment since I'm sitting at 89 lol. Combined with how I'm still over 10 levels higher than the enemies here, I REALLY don't think the game was designed for you to go all in on exploration this fast. I can't imagine I'm the only person it happened to, and I didn't even go out of my way to level or anything. I guess specifically his partner is who sold the items, not him. But yeah, silver and gold shop. Wierd!
