What if I'm sitting at my families house and they're all crying because a relative died and I'm just sitting there feeling nothing and not crying, or if anything, slightly bored

I mean, I guess, but I remember my grandmother dying who was the matriarch of our whole extended family and everyone was just devastated and I was like... yeah this sucks but I mean... I'm fine? I feel nothing

That seems like a super late time to catch on. You should probably look into your depression way before that point.

Maybe you weren't as close to your grandma as them. >_>. I didn't cry when my grandparents died cause I didn't start getting closer to people until more recently. To me, they lived successfully enough mentally to get old and that's beautiful. No reason to cry.

That's textbook depression.
Depression doesn't mean you're sad all the time and your feefees hurt, it means you're incapable of feeling extreme emotions.

Tbf, it could potentially be either of those things. But I get why you're focused on the one that's more relevant right now.

A professional told me. Also recently it turns out I also have anxiety. But I don't feel like I do, probably because I don't feel anything.

When do I know I am depressed?

When I'm driving in my car

I feel no emotions. I described it to my wife the other day as such:

"I don't feel, I think"

being depressed doesnt mean you dont feel emotions. Jesus.

If anything, depressed persons are persons who have undergone several life stressors (Failure to thrive, Loss, life changing events such as a cheating gf, dropping out of college) combined with an inability to cope with said issue. Over a long period of time, this can caused neurotransmitter imbalances and maladaptive behaviors such as binge eating, never going outside (leading to decreased vitamin D, which causes feelings of depression), weight gain (decreased self-image, and social isolation)

catatonic depression is extremely uncommon, and usually associated with other disorders (negative symptoms of schizophrenia, depression in bipolar disorder)

I guess I'm not that depressed.

I don't think it's strange. If you weren't close to her, you can't really expect to have a strong emotional response. Like my grandma died around ten years ago, but I didn't really spend any meaningful time with her, so why would I be broken up over it?

No, you definitely feel and you probably have tons of trauma and personal hangups to address before you will allow yourself to experience what you're feeling.

Or maybe you really don't which would be a form of sociopathy but that's also able to be treated to some extent by allowing yourself to unpack your traumas.

Edit: and to clarify, no, I don't demonize mental health issues, lord knows how many I have and how many my friends have. I'm well aware of enough of them to know though that someone who says they don't feel isn't telling the truth in most cases.

I just do. You wake up because you can't sleep anymore and you sleep because you don't want to be awake anymore. You eat because you have to and you cover it in hot sauce because it doesn't register as food anymore and you could be chewing on a napkin without realizing. Maybe I should stop putting napkins near my food actually.

Id just look up if napkins are harmful when ingested and how many you can get away with eating before it becomes bad. If it's fine, why worry about it.

What is it called when you only feel anything when you're doing something you enjoy/care about? Cuz I feel like I'm watching someone else live through some bullshit until it's time for me to take over to pilot this body when it's fun time.

Tbh, I don't know how it feels to take back over. Passenger syndrome (my own term for it, no context) is how I've lived for decades. Whatever happens, happens, and I'm literally never in control of the outcome.

When my grandma died, I felt anger more than anything. The doctor fucked up. My grandma was very lively even though she was 80, she would have easily lived to 90. It was a simple gall bladder stone removal procedure. They said it was successful but it left her bleeding internally for 3 days. The doctor never once came to check on her during those 3 days when we suspected something was wrong and she wasn't getting better with each day.

They put a scope in her and found nothing was wrong. And put her back in the bed. Next we know she was in ICU unconscious. I couldn't even see her and talk to her one last time.

It's been like 15 years and I still angry when I think about this. Fuck that doctor.
My grandma was closer than my mum, she raised me and she was taken away from us just like that.

You could be more though. Limiting yourself to a box and not allowing yourself to grow beyond that is just... sad. A little pathetic to not at least acknowledge the box. But mostly sad. But really, the "you" that is probably is an entirely false persona you put on to deal with people. And yourself.

No its not. One of my friends has ptsd. She tested for it while living on minimum wage. She gets so annoyed with people who self diagnose because they ruin it for people who dont.

FYI, doing a random google search about something does not make you more a knowledgeable than a medical professional who has gone years of training.

FYI, doing a random google search about something does not make you more a knowledgeable than a medical professional who has gone years of training.

Maybe people wouldn't self diagnose if the country actually gave mental health and health insurance any genuine concern. Her view is ableist, and it doesn't matter that she herself might have PTSD. Fwiw I've had friends who had prior diagnoses for mental health issues and still needed to see a new one 10 times before they would check off anything for disability benefits. So like. :l Grow the fuck up and realize not everyone can get diagnosed, and that underdiagnosis of stuff (especially say, autism in girls) is a huge problem in itself.
