There was just a thread on here the other day about leaving one job for another, and I did read that, but I guess I am soliciting more feedback.

I received an offer from a pretty big tech company. Base salary was less than ideal, but stock options were amazing. There would likely be way more work, and I would have to move across the country (United States, East to West coast). My current job pays pretty well for the area, and it is pretty lax on hours in the office (I can basically be remote whenever), work isn't super stressful and I have free time. Sometimes I call it quits early and game, which I don't think would be possible at this new company.

Basically comes down to career to career opportunity vs living a slightly above average, easier life. Anyone have any thoughts on something like this?

What part of west coast. If your salary offer is less then ideal it's probably not going to help if you have to move to a high cost of living area. That'd be a big risk just to hope it provides better opportunity in the future

Hmmmm. I would stay with current job in this situation compared to the other topic.

Is the new company already public? If so, then stock rewards are definitely a lot more valuable. If it were me I would take the new job, as long as you don't mind moving and leaving any friends/family behind, I kind of like having more work and responsibility.

I have heard tech has been getting slammed recently though, lots of layoffs, might be good to evaluate which company and job is more stable.

New company is on the level of Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc. You make a good point about the layoffs though for sure. That whole area is getting slammed.

Yeah that sounds like a more expensive spot.
I say just chill out at current job unless you want the change of scenery right now.

Yeah I would stay put. If the money isn't much of a jump you're really going to notice it when you consider the cost of living in shit ass California. Sounds like your current job is flexible and that's always something I always want at the top of my list.

I'd be expecting at least a 50% raise to do that. Maybe closer to 100%.

ehhhh it doesn't seem like a slam dunk but it might be worth it if you're really ambitious

I wouldn't want to work for Amazon (I already have) or Facebook, though

Anyone have any thoughts on something like this?

Here are some questions you should answer (to yourself) that will help you make a good decision:
  1. What is the cost of living/salary ratio between both options?
  2. Are you willing to relocate to a different place? Knowing new cities is actually a plus for some people but others might want to stay put if it might impact your family for example.
  3. Is anyone else impacted by your decison? E.g. wife, kids. If so, what do they think?
  4. What are your career goals? Do you want to grow or are you fine doing whatever? Which options provides more room for growth, assuming you want that.
  5. How important is work life balance at this point in life for you? Regardless of the new company having more workload, joining a new team is its own effort.
  6. How open would your existing company be to welcome you back in case you dont like the new one? Would you be willing to relocate back to your current area if the new job doesnt work out?

Overall it is about taking risks depending on what you want. You can decide to take a risk and try it out, see if you like it (assuming no family, you dont mind the hassle of a temporal relocation and you can get your job back if the plan fails). If the risk is too much or the effort to try out the new option is too high for you, then you could consider staying at your current position.

Pay salary wise is "more" but it's wayyy less when factoring in cost of living. Stock options are insane, but I'm not sure if that's worth it for the life move? I'm a plastics tooling engineer.

These are great questions, thank you. I have thought about a lot of these questions, but the question about my company taking me back is almost zero, which is definitely a risk. I do have a cushy job, so it this new opportunity doesn't work it's like holy shit I gave up a very cushy job which I definitely need to consider.

im a toolmaker by the way I work in silicone and plastic tooling.

Holy shit, I never thought I'd see another tooling engineer on Gamefaqs. I design LSR, silicon, composite and thermoplastic molds. I do fixtures, cast, machining, automation, etc. as well.

I worked in sales support so I'd have a wildly different experience than an engineer but the whole company culture is toxic and abusive.

I'm sure a talented engineer could make it a sweet deal but why even work for an evil company like that unless it's your life dream or whatever
