I have heard this is one of the great comeback stories in gaming, and have always thought the game looked interesting. Whats the gameplay like? Is it basically Minecraft in space? Or more of a resource management game like Stardew Valley? What are peoples overall thoughts of where the game is now?

Also, do people recommend starting on Normal or survival mode? Ive heard normal is way too easy

As someone who has started relatively recently, yes it is. There are a few lingering bugs but there is plenty of content now.

Gameplay is mostly planet traversal while foraging resources for crafting and maintaining your life systems with some space flights and fights (both on and offplanet) in between. There's a learning curve to it but it becomes easy once you know which resources to keep on hand and upgrade your equipment and ship.

I have been playing it for a while.

End game when you get a significant amount of money, you can get super rich by finding a deposit and set up a machine to mine ore from it and just sell it to the npc and which can result to trillions in a day.

At that point you pretty much have beaten the game.

If you really don't have to grind (nanites are a pain in the pass to grind), you can use a save editor to give you nanites. Unfortunately they have patched out all the easy nanite farming methods. You won't get punished for it for using the save editor just to get rid of the boring grinding parts. They do the sandbox and exploration really well, however I do wish that there is more things to do in the game, the villages and cities are more for aesthetics and no content. The game is more of a giant sandbox. Don't expect it to be skyrim.

Made it to the Anomaly, I have heard this is where the game starts to open up and the tutorial ends. I feel a bit overwhelmed now on what to do... what is a good way to progress through the game while exploring? Do you build a small base on like every planet you visit? Or just one in every system? I have started doing the side quests, which are fun goals while I am exploring.

Is it best to continue on right away w/ the main story quests and find Artemis pretty quick?

You're limited in the amount of bases you can build (16 I think) so I think it's best to have one big one where you keep your resources and machines and just build small ones on planets you plan to come back to (such as planets with Runaway Mould reserves, which you can refine into Nanites, on them), since you can teleport to any of your bases from any Space Station. You can delete bases when you're done with them too.

It's up to you whether you want to do the Artemis story or other quests first but I will say to do the Base Archives side missions if you haven't already since those unlock a bunch of blueprints. After that, in the Anomaly there is a ring of merchants and kiosks across from the room where you talk with the Korvex guy where you can get more blueprints. Travel to planets/galaxies with the resources you need to build what's in the blueprints.

You can buy a better ship or trade in your starter ship by talking to the NPCs that fly into Stations. You can also buy inventory slots for your exosuit (though keep in mind they get more expensive for each extra slot) and multitools as well.

If you wanna get rich quick there's a guide for finding crashed Starships, repairing their thrusters and launch module, flying them to a Space Station and scrapping them for credits/materials.

Another way to make fast money is market manipulation. Back in the day I bought chlorine then sold it back for a higher price and made profit. Now that I built a mining facility to get materials myself, I just sell that and now I have billions.

If you need help I can also give you things to sell and it should last you for a while.

The best way is to just explore, raid abandoned buildings. You should get a tank vehicle ASAP because it comes with an upgrade that you can use to spam the scanner for abandoned buildings.

Also definitely try to be on a look out for mining spots with your analyzer. S rank mining spots are rare and great for setting up bases on and setting a farm in the future.

Not true, I have more than that. And all of them are basically just mining farms I found.

Any tips for inventory management? I feel like I am running around w/ a full inventory constantly. Are there some basic materials to always keep on hand like carbon/sodium/oxygen, but best to just sell/discard the rest until I need it? I have some stuff from 5 planets ago like Ammonia taking up my inventory right now cause I don't know if I will need it or not soon... plus I get all sorts of random alien relics that just take up additional slots.

I'm thinking I need to build a main base w/ a bunch of storage units and use that as a hub, return after exploring each world and dump all the resources and stuff I don't sell? Is that the best strategy? Right now I am just running around w/ basically my ship as my hub lol

Yeah the inventories are restrictive at the beginning. Oxygen, Carbon, Ferrite Dust, Hydrogen and Sodium are the big ones used to maintain equipment and craft components, while chromatic metal (refined from copper among other ores) is used a lot in blueprints. Tritium you get from destroying asteroids and is needed for your ship thrusters. Then there are other materials that are needed for specific recipes. All that said, most of these resources are not hard to find. You can safely sell plant and animal products like starbulbs and mordite, while gathering other materials is just a matter of finding planets with the correct biome.

The alien race commodities (Casings, Effigies, Relics) you can give to aliens of the corresponding race to increase their affinity, which will open up extra dialog options when interacting with them sometimes.

Each time you visit a new Space station you can buy a new inventory slot from a kiosk on the side with the ship upgrades and such. You can also find those same kiosks in the wild and repair them in order to receive a slot for free. Starship and Multitools can be upgraded using either credits or storage modules. One of the Base Archives missions unlocks a storage container blueprint and you can unlock more of them in the Anomaly.

Get the personal refiner. Makes inventory management easier when you can convert elements on the fly. It's on the anomaly and is sold for nanites.

You also invest in getting the storage boxes at the anomaly and set up a small base with them placed. But ultimately, once you get a freighter, it gets more complicated lol

Any tips for picking a good planet to build your base on? Hopefully one in a system w/ a 3 star economy, not too extreme climate, and next to a trading outpost on the planet?

Planets with star bulbs are good for bases. No radiation/poison/thermal to worry about. Try to get one with relaxed sentinels and no storms. They also tend to have lots of water, which comes with more resources.

I like to drop ranch bases on planets with rarer animal types, for ease of access to cooking ingredients.

Should always build next to an outpost because there is a free shop and a landing pad you can use.

Looks like a Community Expedition just came out? Wtf is that? Lasts for 6 weeks. I don't even have a freighter or anything, is it worth doing the expedition?

Also, is there any sort of map system in the game besides the Galaxy Map? Like is there any sort of overworld map for the planets as you explore them? Or a system map showing like which planets are in each system you have explored?

Expeditions are alternate game instances with different quest objectives--you need to create a new save to start it. If you want a more structured experience or want to interact with other players you can try it; I prefer the sandbox modes though.

No planetary maps that I know of, though you can mark points of interest by crafting and placing save beacons (or base computers if you want to be able to teleport to it). In the pause menu there's a Discoveries tab that will have a list of all the systems you've discovered; if you select a system there will be some planets that are silhouettes, which are the undiscovered ones and ones in full color which are the discovered ones (ones you have landed on).

I spent like 4 hours last night building an epic multi story base on a paradise planet, built it next to a small outpost with a landing pad so I could park and take off for free...

And then the first time I teleported back to my new base my damn ship just spawned right in the middle of the damn building lol I have tried moving my base computer, tried moving the teleporter, and the ship just keeps spawning inside the building. Why the heck doesn't the ship just spawn on the outpost landing pad 20 feet away???

I heard that if I install my own landing pad then the ship *should* spawn there when I teleport in, I hope that is true, I really don't want to move the whole base.

This is correct. Good thing is that you now have a second, more rustic style of landing pad from the Settlers update to use instead of the default one if you dont like how shiny and gaudy it is compared to whatever youve built, so thats quite a bit of relief. Still wish theyd give us that landing beacon style of landing pad used at random facilities you find out while exploring random planets though.

I remember using a glitch years ago for unlimited nanites, I spent days doing it... I wonder if I still have that save file, I had tons of inventory and just grabbed any ship that looked cool when it flew into a station.

Had a freighter too, but hadnt really started using it.

This makes me want to redownload it.
