I mean, 90's kids were sheltered compared to 70's kids, etc.

But it is still funny to think of what I did as a kid (born in 84) that would make a lot of parents today freak the fuck out.

Do you spend a lot of time hanging out with kids today? Or is that maybe you have some misplaced nostalgia for your own youth and believe whatever whiny bullshit you read about "the youths of today"?

Children; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. They no longer rise when elders enter the room, they contradict their parents and tyrannize their teachers. Children are now tyrants.

My parents are afraid of letting my 14 year old sister go outside by herself. I do find it unreasonable. When we lived in Japan my parents didn't really care if I'd be away from home till 5 am during summer vacation. I guess they've read too many news articles about kidnappings in the USA lol.

I knew a kid who had a LaserDisc player and a 3DO. That said, he didn't have a VHS or a 16-bit console, so he was kind of weird.

3DO had a few games that were years ahead of their time visually, and even though something weren't great games, at that time something simply being 3D was mind-blowing

back in the 90s we didn't really have cell phones. I didn't get mine until something like 2003 and even then it was an old flip phone. My mom would tell me specifically to go out and play, and only come back when the moon starts coming out.

Alright, if we wanna get real about the whole isolation of kids argument, it honestly comes down to economics.

Parents today have less money than they did in previous generations. This is the first generation since recording that kids are worth less than their parents. This downturn in economics means a couple things:

  1. Less finances to actually get kids involved in things. Not all "outside stuff" costs a lot of money, but look at a lot of sports... inherent costs and costs to keep those all running efficently.
  2. Both parents working at the same time. Even if you wanted to try and argue that there is free shit kids can do, kinda hard if both parents are working and as such it is illegal to leave your kids home alone. You gotta put them in daycare, where they are certainly socializing with other kids, but probably indoors with a lot of safe things to do inside to avoid risks.
  3. If both parents are working more often and there are multiple children at home, even as a kid gets a bit older they are far more likely to be tasked with keeping younger siblings safe and cared for. What is a 13 year old gonna do for their 8 year old sibling? Probably not go out to the park alone together and play; they're gonna hop on Minecraft or something.

I guarantee you if more families had the same financial opportunities that they did in the 50's up to the 90's, there would be a lot less of the "isolation" type behavior some are suggesting. It's a financial situation first and foremost.

Ew boomer humor. I played plenty of video games in the 90's. I don't think kids now are all that different from 90's kids. Hell, by the time Gameboy color came out in '98, most of my friends at school were playing gameboy at recess, not running around.

Yea this I remember going to camp in 99 and everyone was playing gameboy and yugioh cards outside while another half played games around the camp like rock climbing and swimming in the pool. It was the sane as today except no cell phones or internet but kids equally played video games and were active.

As a 90s kids, the memes comparing milennials in the 90s to z and later kids now has almost always been cringe to me.

Yes, I do have a lot of nostalgia growing up as a kid without a smartphone and playing outside with friends... But technology really picked up in the early 2000s, and Milennials now are just as hooked as ever to technology.

And who do you think raised those kids who are on ipads? Gen X and Y. On one hand, it is more expensive to pay for rent and you have two working parents now usually, but you can still raise your kids to not be on electronics 24/7 as well.

The only thing I really find cringe and sad is how people are relying so much on social media for approval and it's made a lot of people become more selfish and narcasstic. I wish TikTok never existed.

Depends on the child, as a 90's kid I didn't play outside that much, I definitely didn't hit any home runs.

Where as I know some zoomers who were athletic as kids and did great in sports.

That's absolutely true. It really depends on the parents that raised them and was around.

Tell 'em where I'm from
Not geographically
Time-wise
Boy, I'm from the 90s, boy, I'm from the 90s
Boy, I'm from the 90s, didn't cha know?
Girls with the scrunchies, ribbons, and bows
The Velcro shoes and the neon clothes
Boy, I'm from the 90s, boy, I'm from the 90s
Boy, I'm from the 90s, didn't cha know?
I had a boom box with the tunes from a tape cassette
Be kind rewind that VHS
Boy, I'm from the 90s; ever heard of Light Bright?
Playin' ball hockey underneath the street lights
With my Tamagotchi and a pair of sweet Nikes
Yeah, we had computers, but they were the big type
I'm talkin' Windows 95 and a dial-up modem to get online
Couldn't talk on the phone at the same time
In the AOL chatrooms actin' fly
Because we didn't have cellphones, man, we didn't do that!
You hopped on a bike to figure out where your crews at
Find them and cruise back for a game of mini sticks
We wore Spandex; man, it was ridiculous
I never had a tablet, but I had a Game Boy
And a BMX crew rollin' in a convoy
Cards in the spokes and the pegs for doublin'
Frames decked out in the stickers from bubble gum
Boy, I'm from the 90s, boy, I'm from the 90s
Boy, I'm from the 90s, didn't cha know?
Girls with the scrunchies, ribbons, and bows
The Velcro shoes and the neon clothes
Boy, I'm from the 90s, boy, I'm from the 90s
Boy, I'm from the 90s, didn't cha know?
I had a boom box with the tunes from a tape cassette
Be kind rewind that VHS
James Bond, marathon, N64
Played till our eyes hurt, then we wrapped the cords
Tech Decks, Yoyos, cap guns, Pop Rocks
Moon Shoes, Devil Sticks, Yak Baks, hopscotch
Spice Girls, Aqua, Off Spring, and Green Day
Columbia House, CDs, and eBay
Bean bag chairs were considered the norm
We collected Pepsi Points for a reward
We cut 'em outta the box, under the lid for bottles
Touchin' the covers of all the Goosebumps novels
Tales from the Crypt, Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Saturday cartoons, Slammers and Pogs
I would watch, The Rock call some people Jabronies
Then head to my homies to turn on the Sony
Boy, I'm from the 90s, boy, I'm from the 90s
Boy, I'm from the 90s, didn't cha know?
Girls with the scrunchies, ribbons, and bows
The Velcro shoes and the neon clothes
Boy, I'm from the 90s, boy, I'm from the 90s
Boy, I'm from the 90s, didn't cha know?
I had a boom box with the tunes from a tape cassette
Be kind rewind that VHS
In my school days, man, I was learnin' the atlas
Came home at lunch for some soup and a sandwich
Fruit by the Foot now you're speakin' my language
Whoever had player one had the advantage
My glow in the dark stars lit up the ceiling
And Apollo 13 had this boy dreamin'
I would use a wooden chair as a space shuttle
Lay it down, then pretend I was Jim Lovell
Blastin' off like a real-life astronaut
Caught the bus to Franois' for basketball
And we got there; his Mom had the snacks ready
And in the back yard, Dad had a black Caddy
Looking back at it, time passed by so soon
Hot days with freezes and water balloons
So this tune's dedicated to the 90s kids
It's been a pleasure to stop and rewind a bit
Boy, I'm from the 90s, boy, I'm from the 90s
Boy, I'm from the 90s, didn't cha know?

I was born in 1978, so Im technically Gen X.

Both of my parents worked in NYC. Left at 6:30am, didnt come home until after 6pm

i was still out of the house everyday from the moment school let out till 6pm, when I knew they were coming home soon. Rode my bike to baseball practice, the park, into town to play XMen Arcade at the pizza place.

I cant get my 13 year old son to go further than 4 houses down my block, where his best friend lives. He tells me why go out when all my friends can hook up on the PlayStation and do whatever we would do if we were all together?

Yes, this is only one example, but if you have kids, or know someone with younger (8-14 years old) ask yourself, how many of them arent driven to practice, sports games, or whatever play date you have set up for them?

Hell I was a spoiled child with five siblings and we had every relevant console growing up lol. *Only one we didn't have was a saturn, but that was mainly because we was completely satisfied with the N64 and PS1 combo and did not see the need to actually ask for it at the time.*

It also helps that my dad was also really into gaming himself so he definitely did not mind playing his own favorite games or just playing co-op with us.

The way your son is, is true for me as well, but I live in Los Angeles, so that probably changes things. There's rarely much that's within walking/biking distance. So as a kid, whenever I did something with school friends, one of our parents had to drive us. When I rode bikes with kids from my neighborhood, we never went farther than 2 blocks away.

My son is 7 now and same thing. If he goes to a park or something, it's by car.

Also, I always assumed the 89 in your username was your birth year. Surprised to see you're not also a millennial lol

89 = Uniform number of my all time favorite player, Mark Bavaro

Had to drop the e from Big Blue, because Im old enough to remember when AOL screen names could only be 8 characters. Lol

But I get that a lot. People thinking I was born in 89 bc of my screen name.
