I remember a year or two ago I watched through the first like 70 episodes, and then quit. Didn't even get half way.

From this point on, what are the episodes to watch and episodes to skip? Which arcs are can't miss?

I wouldn't skip any of them, though the least impactful at least when it comes to the story of Dragonball Z would be the Red Ribbon arc and Pilaf arc. At the very least don't skip the Pilaf arc, its short and introduces the great ape.

Cell is hit or miss

DBZ is best through Frieza.

It's not a bad thing. Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars film, and the others just don't quite compare. Berserk's best arc is the Golden Age. Pokemon never quite surpassed G1. Transformers too. Etc. If you churn out one amazing story in your entire life, that's enough to make a fan out of me because they are rare.

I mean, the Android arc is one of the "can't miss" Z arcs and is a full blown sequel to the Red Ribbon arc. And Pilaf and Co. are important to both Super and GT, if either are your thing.

Other than the flagrant filler episodes, Dragonball as a franchise doesn't have a whole lot of "skip it" material.

Even the filler has gems like the infamous Driving Episode.

I'd say the "training with kami" bit in OG dragonball is a big miss. The "training for the saiyans" filler, the "on the way to namek" filler, and "bulma on namek" filler are absolute skips. The cell games prep can largely be skipped. otherworld tournament is fun but not even a little important, same with most of the Great Saiyaman arc.

Honestly, just finish up OG dragonball, then watch DBZ Kai, if you want all of the missable stuff removed. You'll lose something of the original charm and a few gem filler moments, but its about the most trimmed down dragonball can really be.

This is kinda where I was going with what I was saying next. After Frieza, DBZ tapers off a bit but still introduces new ideas that connect to Dragonball in a meaningful way at least throughout the Android saga. If you skip stuff, wont you miss out on the real genius behind DBZ which is their take on the episodic formula mixed with a continuous narrative, and that trademark pacing, and waste an opportunity to actually get to spend a lot of time with some great characters?

The Cell Tournament wasn't better than the movies

And

Are you just trying to catch up for Super? Where did you drop off at?
