IIRC, by the time the episode where Tommy becomes the White Ranger aired, Austin St. John, Thuy Trang and Walter Jones had already left the show but this episode had already been filmed. The part where Zordon announces Tommy as the new leader was dubbed after the scene was filmed, which is why there isn't much of a reaction or any dialogue during the scene from Jason or Tommy about the title of leader being transferred from Red Ranger to White Ranger.

I wonder how different that dynamic would have been if the three original actors stayed. Would Jason have remained the Leader of the Rangers?

I dunno but here is some fun trivia
In season one of the show only Jason's actor was an actual teenager
He was 19 when he was cast as a teenager with attitude
The rest of the rangers were all around 20 and 22.

Of course In season 2 he was 20 so no longer a teenager
But Johnny yong bosch had just turned 18 when he was cast as the second black ranger making him the only actual teenager in the teenage cast

Not much since Jason returns as the gold ranger eventually they also brought in Adam, Rocky and Aisha in before turning them into rangers.

Also a fun fact on the episode Gung ho where Tommy and Jason are learning to work as team Adam is one of the masked ninjas that Bulk and Skull have this was a year before he actually got the part as the black ranger

I realize you probably didn't mean to word it this way, but Jason came in as the Gold Ranger well after Adam/Rocky/Aisha came in. That's obvious since Rocky replaced Jason lol. But what is also interesting is that while Adam/Rocky/Aisha were brought in and Jason/Trini/Zack hadn't left yet, the actors actually had left, and were written out of major storylines for several episodes and employed the use of body doubles and footage they already had to piece together the episodes. And some voiceovers from people who didn't sound like them lol.

Interesting factoid about the original Power Rangers, Zack the Black Ranger has only 4 fingers on his left hand.

I think it could go either way.

Tommy was the breakout star and Saban had a very simple approach towards the show. If he thought making Tommy the leader wouldve brought in even slightly more cash, he probably wouldve found a way to make it happen.

On the other hand, the "leader' role in Power Rangers was more of a formality than one with any real function. Changing the leader doesnt change the dynamic of MMPR in any significant way. Jason could have easily remained the figurehead while Tommy continued to hog screen time.

To answer the question now, yes I believe Jason would have remained leader if the actors stayed on. There would be no reason to demote him otherwise.

Saban let Tommy's actor go without notice a couple years after this anyway.

i dont remember this being the case, I thought JDF was ready to leave halfway through Turbo and it was the rest of the cast that didnt know they were getting let go

but could be remembering that wrong

I am wondering if JDF was already higher up on the food chain as it is. He also just retired about a month and a half ago from the Power Rangers.

MMPR film and voiceover schedule was awful for what the roles paid. They filmed the first movie and the series at the same time. They even had to do a stretch where they filmed in Australia. I think they only had that one break when they did that story arc with a bunch of child actors.

My favorite MMPR tale was the original face-model and voice of Zordon leaving after the first 20 episodes or so. They still used the original actor's face as Zordon for years on the TV series afterwards.

As long as were talking theories Did you know the fan theory is that the Zeo Rangers still exist and are still the most powerful Rangers? In fact, Zordon made them switch to the Turbo powers because the Zeo powers were too strong and he has a rule about never escalating a fight.

amy jo johnson wanted to leave the show as early as season 2
she didnt want to be typecast as the pink ranger as she wanted to be a serious actor and she felt the show would keep her from that.
during season 3 they talked her out of leaving right off the bad and managed to keep her for most of season 3 and give her a 9 episode long arc building up to her leaving the show.

then she stopped talking about power rangers in interviews and treated it like an embarrassing old shame even though it made her famous.
then much later on she got cast as jules in the canadian made show flashpoint which had 3 seasons and was the number 1 show in canada finally achieving her dream of being a serious actress.
then she fell in love with canada. applied for duel citizenship and now lives full time in toronto.

and she is much more willing to talk about her power rangers days now though she still doesnt go to power ranger conventions but thats due to her having a bad experience with a stalkerish fan

She does go to some Comic Conventions though, she was at the last NYCC I went to in 2019 advertised as the Pink Ranger. I didn't get to talk to her though

You are correct. He had to be convinced to stay as long as he did in the new season. I think Kat was leaving too. So they did a clean sweep and forced the others out.
