Being honest, if I got superpowers, I'm pretty sure I would hide them, and use them furtively and primarily for my own gain. Not just a secret identity but more like "nobody is aware a person with this ability exists".

This goes for supervillains too actually, it's always you get powers and then decide to either attack a city or defend a city from the villains who got powers.

Not everyone does. It's just the comics focus on the ones who do. Particularly with Mutants in marvel, there are many who try to live normal lives

I almost mentioned how Jojo is good about this. In Jojolion, Norisuke compares hiding your stand to hiding porn. But in Jojo people without stands already can't see them.

I absolutely do

This is like half the appeal of JoJo

Also, fighting crime seems pretty great when it's easy and convenient.

IIRC in one fiction's canon, it's explained that the force that gives them their powers compels them to either become criminals or heroes.

If you started doing extrajudicial killings, you wouldn't be a hero in real life -- but a murderer, and with good reason.

Spiderman wasn't even remotely responsible for the death of Ben. Imagine Peter never got powers, or he did and decided to do nothing with them. The thug still shows up to the fight club, still robs it, and still kills Ben. Peter isn't responsible.

In some circles of philosophy, inaction is an action, as they say " indecision is a decision, inaction is an action, and both action and inaction have consequences."

That is not a philosophical circle I ascribe to. I'm more of a Nietzsche 'der wille zur macht' kind of guy.

People using powers for personal gain are all over superhero comics in every franchise. They're just called "villains"
