you should try out Wasteland 3.

it has a similar tactical combat structure, but it's also a full-fledged RPG, where you can choose how you want to level up each of your characters, both in and out of combat.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is also worth trying.

it has some of the best mechanics in its genre, IMO.

it's also an RPG, like Wasteland 3, and both have social systems that can affect gameplay.

Yeah, Wasteland 3 will feel comfortably similar in combat. The main difference is that it uses an Action Point system instead of a movement-action system. This functionally means that once you set up in a good spot you can attack several times if you have the AP for it.

Oh, and you'll have a vehicle that can support you when fighting on open ground outside of cities. So in addition to the usual rockets and grenades you can mow down enemies with a 20mm cannon and the like.

if you got a Nintendo Switch, then the answer is easy: Mario + Rabbids.

might be a more simplistic take on XCOM but its quite fun and addictive!

Xenonauts is heavily inspired by Xcom. The devs made ot as a spiritual sequel to the original just before Xcom2 released.

If you do play it, look into getting the community edition mod as well. It keeps the game very close to vanilla but fixes a bunch of bugs, improves performance, and adds quality of life changes. Its practically endorsed by the devs themselves, so its definitely worth getting if youre planning on giving the game a shot.

There's a game based on a Swedish table top RPG called something like Mutant: Year Zero that's supposed to be similar to XCOM.

Second on Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden and Massive Chalice too.

Year Zero is fun because it doesn't go into combat until you or the enemy starts first attack. So you can separate a large group of enemies up and silently take stragglers off before attacking the bulk of the enemies.

I wouldnt go for things similar to XCOM personally. I tried Mutant Road Zero and didnt like it but then again maybe I picked too high of a difficulty.

Id go for something new.

Personally these are my favorites:
  • Into the Breach
  • Slay the Spire
  • Monster Train
  • Inscryption

Asides from the Mech/Giant bug chess game that is Into the Breach, most of these are deck building RPGs. If you need more of those Darkest Dungeon is pretty fun, though I would play it on radiant mode, it doesnt even make the game easier, just makes it faster paced so less grinding to upgrade your town.

I hear Divinity: Original Sin is also really good.

I haven't played XCom but if you like turn based with action points reset each turn, Jagged Alliance was really fun (2 especially). You control individual people though, not squads...

Fallout Tactics Brotherhood of Steel is also similar, but gameplay isn't quite as refined.

I can't rec Slay the Spire enough, I spent countless hours playing it. Roguebook is probably the best alternative to StS, another real great, very similar game.

I have it but gave up early due to the RNG aspect. I was thinking of starting over again on a lower difficulty but I despise that, and I'll miss out on trophys likely.
