Did you not watch the video? The man may have been mentally ill, but he was irate and uncooperative, was apparently suicidal, may have had firearms on him and refused to exit the vehicle and attempted to use the vehicle as a weapon. Their reaction seems fair considering he was a threat to them and the public at large with the way he was acting.

They need to stop sending police to do these welfare checks. Send social workers, not guns.

Yes I watched it. Cops always escalate mentally ill people's moods. What might begin peaceful turns violent cause cops only know how to agitate people in a crisis

Because the guy is totally going to listen to social workers compared to cops, right? What if he escalated against them? They could have gotten hurt and the cops would be approaching him anyway.

I was recently watching an Audit The Audit video where the police pulled over a suspected drunk driver. He threw out a very surprising statistic. Did you know that most mental health professionals cant even reasonably distinguish between a mental health impairment and a substance abuse impairment? They can manifest such similar symptoms (I guess is the right word) that even someone trained to deal with the mental health of others cant immediately distinguish between the two.

So the idea that you can instantly tell who needs police involvement and who needs a social worker is a myth. There is no such person on the planet who can adequately make that determination with certainty.

There's no 911 dispatch to assign mental health workers

I cant think of anything more dangerous than two authority figures shouting conflicting instructions.

Some agencies, including the one I work for, have specialists on hand to be sent out with officers on such calls.

But, we only have them for a portion of the day. Like a lot of areas, they are short on people, so we cant always have one available.

Have you met your average 911 operator? It was like the first job this dude out of my high school got. You dont want these people to determine who needs a cop and who needs a social worker.

Seems like they'd be better equipped at dealing with the emotional stress of a guy having a mental episode than a bunch of guys screaming at him with weapons drawn.

They get there and the guy is yelling nonsense about looking at his phone. Immediately the cops escalate things and point a gun at him. Which means the conclusion from this was pretty inevitable.

Even when they do shoot him one cop specifically yells that he has a cane. His fellow officers shoot him anyway. Then they all do.

Kinda seems like if you're calling up US police to get a man suffering a mental breakdown you're just sending in an execution squad.
