If done right I could see research and development costing that much for a new coaster. Liability is a huge concern so they can't really afford mistakes.

I watched a couple of videos on a YouTube channel about the construction of new roller coasters and they were talking about the technology that goes into making sure the coasters stop at certain points and switch over to other tracks and maintain certain speeds. After seeing everything that goes into it, $40 million+ sounds about right

I can't really fathom that amount of money but it definitely seems like it woud be expensive

gotta design it, gotta pay for all the physical materials (which is a lot since they're pretty big) including a bunch of stuff more complex/hightech than just beams of metal, need to pay for assembly labour, probably needs tons of safety checks and inspections...

Stuff like Disney world and six flags? Yes, easily. Your average park probably would be half that or less.

Carnival rides aren't really in the same ballpark at all. Those are prefab units whereas amusement park rides are custom built semi-permanent structures

Why wouldn't they cost that much...? You do realize that these are figures that legally need to be accurately reported to shareholders and shit, right?

It's several hundred tons of steel combined with a ton of labor for design and construction and maintenance, what do you expect it to cost?

Not a coaster, but the two Rise of the Resistance rides cost $1 billion each. The full experience is about 15 minutes long and is pretty amazing.
