2. Star Sapphire Ring (Starsa)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/8/6/AAOJ0pAADcgS.jpg
Yes. The second best DC Comics character (inarguably) is not Star Sapphire (Carol or otherwise), but rather, the ring she wore when pestering Hal Jordan all those years ago.

How does a ring rank so highly? Why has "accessory character" stopped being an insult and started being a literal class of character? Is one really so pretty in pink? Well, let me tell you how this tale goes... it is a familiar tale. The tale of a high-powered synthetic intelligence acquiring personality and self-determination through interactions with living beings, to the point where the intelligence as good as demonstrates life and thought itself.

Scratch back to week 6 of this campaign. That's right, Starsa has been in the campaign longer than 37 characters on this top 52 list. So anyway, there we were in Atlanta, which had a pink dome up to help keep the Kancer in (buh?) and after our return, read: our return trip to Atlanta, we were going to do something about it. I mean, the way this campaign works, we have first visits to places, and maybe first questlines, but the idea of returning to a place doesn't happen very often unless it's part of the first visit's quest. So us going back in week 6 was surprising and something we maybe don't see in the modern day of the campaign where we have like 100 possible missions to tackle. So going back was maybe a fluke of early campaign.

Anyway, after debasing the statue of a war hero, joining a cult, and crashing a car twice, we finally end up in a battle with Billy Numerouses and win, before Star Sapphire (Debbie Darnell) shows up to tell us to get on out of there. But we say "hey, Chimp said we should really talk to you about the Spectre, since the ring you have is tangentially related to magic" and it's really not but she told us we could fuck off anyway and told the Spectre to fuck off so he appeared and blew her up.

All that was left behind was a ring. And this ring was rather by-the-books recorded message type at first. "Hello. I am a Star Sapphire Ring. I am seeking assistance in finding a host capable of wielding me." Pretty straight-forward stuff - the green grid cast over the planet prevented communication with the Star Sapphire Corps beyond the stars and interrupted the global scanning abilities of the ring. We could have let her go on her own to find a new Star Sapphire but that'd have been catastrophic. So we kept the ring, promising to find a new host. A quest in which we haven't made nearly as much headway as one might have wished, despite having three(almost four) options available to us.

In that first encounter, the ring was interesting, but just a ring. It managed to earn a little early credit though when Saoirse and Pepper Spray introduced their selves to it. Mainly because of how it responded.
"Hello Seershaw. Hello Papper Spraye."

I mean, my Irish accent sucks and Vis's southern one isn't bad, but Scar doing the ring interpreting our accents in an upfront way like this was absolutely hilarious. Once we took the ring home, however, it finally hit it's catchphrase: "Hi there!"

So the ring went through some development. Light development. We would take it along to scan places. We would tell it to listen to our determination on matches, go into stealth mode, everything like that. While "trust" might be a strong word, the ring at least decided it would listen to us. There were some times it would speak up - such as when scanning in Keystone/Central Cities where it identified a match. And perhaps it was disappointed when we said that match was not an acceptable one at the moment.

We started to see that. Telling the ring to go into Saoirse's purse. "Okay" it would say, a little sadly. It would show disappointment when not able to find a host. It would apologize when a scan turned up nothing!

It was week 28 where we brought back Patch, and Patch quickly grew to like the Star Sapphire Ring. Now, Patch mispronounces things a lot. Roz'etta became "Roses-are-redda" for instance. Though perhaps this was only endearment, Patch began to call Star Sapphire Ring "Starsa". A name which the ring grew to like and adopt, along with choosing to be considered as a feminine being.

She would go on with this slight development - eventually, she fixed the way she pronounced Saoirse and Pepper's names, and would show legitimate disappointment when being told to hide away. She liked to be taken out. We had a new party member, Silhouette, who summons his shadow as a physical entity named Nikhto. Starsa loves Nikhto! "Hello Nikhto!" perhaps because he is shadow, the antithesis of light, and this makes him very interesting to her.

With Patch's help, Saoirse probably dug into friendly and casual conversations with Starsa a bit more. After all, Starsa was a champion of love, or the scientific power of pink. And, well, sometimes love can hurt. Love can have issues. These were slowly pursued, and not in full depth, but Starsa was given a lot to think about at times.

Pretty in Pink part 1 (session name) was week 6. Pretty in Pink Part 2 was week 43. That's where we found out that her power battery was destroyed by Black Hand and that she was on borrowed time. When her energy ran out, she would shut down complete and suffer total memory death.

This ring, which had a purpose of being used by a being that could channel great love, who had been making friends and coming to understand concepts of humanity through a light they normally would never have seen, suddenly had to deal with the concept of mortality. And she did not take it well. Losing her partner, her battery, was shattering. She was alone. Understanding that the memories she has and had been building on were set to expire. The friends she had made. The opportunity to find a new host. It would all end.

So we were now on a timer to make it to space to get to Zamaron somehow to get her a new battery. Problem is, we had no way of getting off-planet and a grid was in place by the Alpha Lanterns preventing anybody from doing so. So of course, we needed to get to space by going as far as possible to the core of the planet to the land of Skartaris where we would save the Warlord's daughter then give her away as a tool to Deimos, the big bad down there, so that we could use a magic portal to hop into space. Easy!

Along the way, since we had a timer, a few things had to be tried to extend Starsa's time. We found Doctor Light during this time, and she was able to provide a limited charge. We found Kid Eternity, who summoned Juliet Capulet, who was able to provide a charge since she was slated to be a Star Sapphire centuries ago.

During this time of facing mortality AND hope, Starsa made some of her biggest strides. She began to explore creativity, writing a song for Nikhto. She explored concepts of friendship further, and determined she was not capable of having a deep connection to someone where she would date them, and said that her and Nikhto were just friends. She explored her own concepts of fear - fear of the yellow, anxiety, hope... emotions that the Guardians and Zamaraneans would not have. Bloodfruit (Johnbobb's character who is a fairy) suggested to Starsa that she could be a Star Sapphire herself, and wield another ring, and Starsa very strongly said she didn't want to. An actual desire of the ring herself. There was also Helen Jordan, niece of Hal, who got shot during the attack on Kobra, and Starsa was able to connect with her easily, as a stand-in for Carol of years past.

She had gone through so much, developing into this cheerful personality that wanted to help her friends as much as find a new host. And so it was week 70 when we got to space, and week 72 when we got to Oa. It was this past session, week 78, when we finally got to Zamaron. And we finally got her a new battery.

Now, all the love that was given to Starsa before I started doing my write-ups for this ranking, I could have provided it all. She earned her placement here. But since starting this list, we went to Zamaron and boy howdy. We all knew Star Sapphires had problems. They are culty. They fed a warlord to a giant pink beast which drained all of his emotions and left him a golem of love only. Which, you know, seems like maybe he wasn't a good match then. And of course, Starsa loves the Corps unconditionally. Starsa is so happy to have gotten her new battery. She loves Queen Aga'po, and Carol Ferris whom we found there, her old partner. She believes in the Corps whole-heartedly. Why shouldn't she? Love conquers all. And the Star Sapphires are supposed to combinate with the Green and help bring peace and love to the galaxy at large.

We have misgivings about the Star Sapphire Corps.

This has done us a disservice in terms of taking one of our besties, who was being taught to be her own person, and linking her with a problematic ideology that she had been separated from previously. Additionally, being reconnected with the Corps, she now can connect to them at any time, and anything she experiences or hears can be directly shared with them all. It's unnerving.

Starsa's development has been a fantastic slow ride. It's crazy to listen back to the first session with her and realize that she has come so far. She's not just an accessory with a limited intelligence - she's her own self now. And somehow, saving her life was made to be Pyrrhic and I've still not come to terms with it (just like Trish in campaign 1...). I love the little ring, but now we've got a whole new set of problems. At least she's never boring.

There's also a mostly unspoken truth awaiting the end of this - what happens when we do decide on her new host? She has matches so far with a dead Sue Dibny, a blind Madame Xanadu, and an Equated Wonder Woman.
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/9/1/AAOJ0pAADcgX.png
But we could end up passing her on to a new host, and perhaps that host might not give Starsa the room to speak. She certainly won't be able to take bubble baths with Saoirse anymore (well probably). What happens when this beloved friend accepts her role as accessory? There's a lot of apprehension to be had for this inevitable conclusion, to the point where part of me wants to put it off as long as possible. But we need a Star Sapphire to help us beat Darkseid. And if we could unEquate Wonder Woman at the same time... it's hard to say no to.

All of this is to say it is absolutely amazing how many feelings can be stirred for such an iconic DC character - Star Sapphire Ring. To me, characters like this are the pinnacle of the tabletop roleplaying game experience. Nothing but a ring, finding friendship and a sense of self through interactions over the years, facing mortality and finding new life, only to be destined to be a ring in the end.

But for now, she's a bestie, and she's going to get all the bubble baths and songs with Nikhto that she wants.

Hint for 1: And then there was 13.

I really thought Starsa overtook Traci!

When I made the list, this is how the pieces fell.

I could see Starsa overtaking Traci at any given time depending on mood. And I will remind that this list was finalized before we went to Zamaron, so Starsa missed some time.

I haven't RP'd with Traci in awhile but she's next on the list. Unless I do my 2 hours of RP before then, which could only happen on a Thursday which I think is busy for some reason? Maybe I'm wrong.

1. Traci 13 (Traci Thirteen)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/1/3/AAOJ0pAADcrp.png
This is a campaign with a large spotlight on magic. The genesis of the Society's unity is based on magic. The Spectre was introduced in both week 1 sessions. Two of the PC's are magicians. The Oblivion Bar is a key part of the base. There are themes of next-generation heroes in this campaign - at least there have been for most of the runtime so far. There's a gathering of Eighth Age magicians, and they all are finding a place on this list - Alice, Freddy, Misty, even Jaime is sort of magic adjacent. So finding a young magician at the top of the list should be no surprise.

Traci's introduction was all second-hand. We first learned from Jaime that he was trying to ferry her across the border to Juarez. Second trip to El Paso resulted in meeting Leroy, her familiar, who was trying to link back up with her because La Dama's people raided the school Jaime was based out of and kidnapped her. La Dama wanted her for her magic, you see. There were like three or four other El Paso/Juarez/Warpath sessions in that time, all before Traci would get introduced proper.

See, we had an issue with El Paso/Juarez. It was La Dama vs La Llorona. Some of us sided with the shrewd businesswoman drug queenpin, and some sided with the ghost of vengeance in La Llorona. Both women had done the other harm. Perhaps La Dama was more of a practical choice, and La Llorona more of a moral one, but even still we could not agree. And during this all, Traci stayed captured and Leroy without his mage.

It was in a conversation Saoirse had with Leroy where he gave clear thoughts - Traci needed to be rescued. And Saoirse, who was on the first trip to El Paso and none of the others, had been hands off. But now it was about rescuing and protecting another young magician, a mission with Saoirse felt a personal compulsion to see through. I don't know if it helped, but having a vote for "La Dama or La Llorona, whichever gets Traci saved faster" at least gave me some direction in the process.

We ended up getting La Dama and La Llorona to reluctantly agree to work together, and lead all of their people south in a convoy to the tip of South America while the Society took El Paso which was already being destroyed by magic blue beetles. There was a lot of drama along the way. There is still drama. Anyway, at the conclusion of this handshake, before the convoy left, Traci was brought to the party, and with Leroy reuniting with her, she was taken back to Z'onn Z'orr.

Now, we would get a taste of vanilla Traci 13. Unsure of what to expect, a few of us would visit her over time, and receive impressions - for Saoirse at least, Traci was a girl alone, separated from her family, including a father whose role was to disprove magicians and the supernatural. Traci was someone who suffered attempts to find a place in the world, whose mother had died when she was younger and whose didn't quite get her as well. And through that all, Traci forced out a smile, and chose to be cheerful through the pain.

Through survival tactics or otherwise, Traci began attaching herself to people. Saoirse was one of those early choices. And while it could be said that Traci was taking advantage of this lonely woman she spoke to who seemed a little lost herself, and that she could attach herself to this mage who had status in Checkmate and at least some corner of the magic community... well, Saoirse was okay with that. Because Saoirse was all of those things. Especially a girl who lost her father in a divorce when she was ten, who never lived up to her mother's designs, and whose marriage collapsed into failure, whose punk band dissolved as quickly as it gained traction, and whose only friend was a green-skinned supermodel superhero who originally showed up to shut her down.

Saoirse never had a sibling, nor much of a family, and here was Traci offering to be witch sisters with her. And perhaps because Traci's family life had issues, it was a need for her as well. Saoirse began to be Traci's guide to the organization and community, and Traci began to be Saoirse's guide to, well, having family. A symbiotic relationship developed between the two, which had its fair share of rocky points so far.

Lush had a time where she was not trusting Saoirse and so brought along Traci to Shadowcrest, where Lush went a little crazy after discovering Misty. Saoirse was not happy with Lush bringing Traci into harm's way because she had not yet learned to trust Traci in the field. But perhaps that lack of trust was overshadowed by Lush being crazy, and Traci doesn't like Lush at all while she's one of Saoirse's besties, so there's some drama there.

Traci also has been trying to explore her own role as a magician and a young woman. She saw Saoirse as a role model. Saoirse is someone who uses her body to gain an edge as much as her magic and when Traci tossed out the casual "I want to do that too", at the expense of romance, it put Saoirse in a tough spot where she was influencing this girl to adopt some of the traits she had herself adopted as survival mechanisms in a world where she had failed often. But Traci was young and not in the same position, yet wanted to be more like Saoirse. Was Saoirse right as a role model? Or was it to be a "do as I say, not as I do"? And was Saoirse really in a position where she could tell Traci what to do as an older sister without having known her for more than a short while, without being flesh and blood? Should Saoirse trust Traci as a young woman to make her own decisions, even if Saoirse didn't want her to throw away life experiences she deserved to have? Complicated, complicated.

(accidentally hit back and lost some paragraphs here, have to retype, ugh)

The pair have become close. When Saoirse first came to Z'onn Z'orr, she felt it would have been easier with someone in her corner, and so she decided to be that person for Traci. And Traci might have been manipulative in this process, but in so doing, got a witch sister who was perhaps more accepting of her than even her own family. And really, Traci may be manipulative, but Saoirse can be as well. At least enough to recognize how one can use social machinations to get folk to behave in certain ways. If brought to light, shouldn't Saoirse just congratulate Traci on following her example so well? And even if Traci did play her a bit, it's worthwhile for what both girls get out of it, right?

Let's talk about some other Traci interactions for a bit...

Traci took a quick shining to Jaime (which is comics canon, I believe). However, Pepper Spray had been courting him as well. Pepper wanted to be nice to Traci, a fellow young woman, and Traci was overtly friendly with Pepper too. But Traci was clearly taking advantage of Pepper being a field agent and not being around as much, while Traci knew the right angle to play. Pepper wasn't really sure how to handle having a rival, and just stuck to her own corner, but Jaime is a bit of a dope who was stuck in the middle. Then Saoirse threw a wrench in the works at one point by suggesting that maybe Traci should just move on, which she decided to do, but not without punishing Jaime a bit in the process since he was being such a dope. This resulted in an unfortunate scenario where Traci convinced Misty, channeling Star Sapphire, to snog with Jaime, putting both her and Pepper in a position of being fellow women scorned. Poor Pepper. Disagreements ensued, and Jaime soon left to go help the Convoy.

As said, Traci and Lush don't get along. Lush likes Traci. Lush is Saoirse's best friend! So Lush makes the efforts she can to be good to Traci. But Traci is always wary. She knows who Lush was in the past. She knows that Lush accidentally stabbed Jaime at one point. She has seen Lush lose her head at times. Traci does not approve of Saoirse and Lush's friendship, and does not much like that Saoirse has a crush on Lush. So while Traci will scoff in front of Saoirse about Lush, she won't be more than slyly disapproving in an attempt to make the relationship seem less appealing due to her disapproval. But when just in front of Lush, she's scared. But willing to stand up and tell Lush she's not scared, which may or may not land. Either way, it's fascinating to see two of the people Saoirse is closest to at such odds with each other.

Traci hasn't quite gotten as much time with other PC's, but she has had some encounters with Brennus. With Brennus, she put up barriers pretty quickly. These are ones that Saoirse tried to manipulate down by having them talk about shared experiences. Traci traveled over the world with her family without putting down roots, and Brennus did largely the same. There was a lot for them to bond over, and poor Saoirse has been becoming more of a softie as time goes on. On paper, Traci and Brennus should be friends... in actuality, she'll probably find an angle to play on him.

And what angle? Well, let's talk Freddy Freeman for a moment, the most serious of all the young heroes in ZZ. He has experience. He has clout. He has a history as Captain Marvel Jr. And now he's gunning for the top role himself. So you have Brennus crushing on him, Pepper who asked him to kiss at some point, Minerva who got influenced by a pink rainbowfish into swooning for him, and now Traci who decided that, while initially she thought he was too uptight, found him to be a safe person to confide in and decided she wanted him to be her first... drama. So much. And with Brennus being Freddy's best friend here, there lies an avenue of even more drama. So much drama.

And most recently, Saoirse has finally managed to get Constantine agree to train Traci. Traci needed someone to help her along, and Saoirse isn't quite experienced enough for it. And Constantine refused to train Saoirse again (he has gotten too close to her and fears he could not handle it). So Saoirse managed to put this together. Now, Traci did have a moment earlier where she said "Oh, I want to be like you Saoirse, I bet I could sleep with Constantine to get him on our side to give us all the help we need" and Saoirse had to be like hey hold up that's really unnecessary. As it is, this is still a relatively new tutelage, and will see more results upcoming.

Traci has seen a lot of airtime. And she's going to see a lot more. I mean, when she broke from canon by rejecting Jaime, that led her into a completely new avenue of development. As long as she sticks close to Saoirse, she'll get a lot of influence, and being linked to other important characters, like Freddy and Constantine, she can't help but be a central part of the campaign.

Oh! And she's a bit of a weeaboo. She is such a huge fan of the Super Young Team and Big Science Action. She was upset not to come to Tokyo with us. But she's fascinated all the same. There was a time where Saoirse got a spell that turned her eyes pink and Traci called them "kawaii-eyes" which led to a fun situation of Saoirse telling others that Traci said she had "kwai eyes" and not getting it. Also, I started running with a bit where Traci explained shipping to Saoirse and Saoirse gets it like an old person might.

I could go on all day, but I really shouldn't. I think what puts Traci into this top spot for me is that she is just so crucial to my own character. Saoirse came into this campaign suffering from guilt, thinking low of herself, and thinking she shouldn't have attachments. Traci has been blowing a lot of that out of the water. Traci got Saoirse to open up about her infertility - Traci has been able to give support to Saoirse to suggest that maybe things aren't always her fault. Traci has gotten Saoirse to accept attachments, that maybe she deserves them. Hell, Traci can drop an off-hand complement about Saoirse's appearance, which due to the trust between the two, has the power to completely take Saoirse into a new state of mind where she can maybe rise above some of her self-esteem issues.

Traci has been a foil and a tool of development, and as time goes on, there are too many characters pulling attention away from Traci and that's no good so I will endeavor to make sure she gets her screentime. After all, Traci still has a lot of (growing up to do) development yet to come, and each step is one fascinating step into the unknown for a dynamic character with tons of depth, and tons of complexity yet to mold and explore.

I'll leave off with this commission I got done of the pair of Saoirse and Traci - a sisterhood that transcends blood, forged by the kiln of a world in ruin, a symbiosis where either side might be taking advantage of the other, and where roads unpaved will lead to perhaps one of the closest friendships this campaign will have by the end... granted they don't end up in a position where a failure to influence leads to anger and conflict. But hey, as long as Leroy and Twiggy are best friends, they'd always come back together in the end, anyway.

To witch sisters~

Traci feels like she's suffered most from the introduction to Oa of the many, many, many characters in Z'onn Z'orr. But I do always enjoy Saoirse and Traci getting together and hatching plans and discussions. One of my personal favorite conversations was where Traci began to lay out her strategies to get Saoirse into a position of influence in Checkmate. She's just such a little player.

This was such an awesome list! It's just so rewarding to see how much you care about the campaign, also knowing how much effort you devote to Saoirse and her journey through it thus far.

Interestingly, I don't think Oa is necessarily the cause of that. Hal got a handful of convos in, but I really had such a loaded list from others that has taken priority throughout. I mean, Kim, the Kobra stuff, have had a lot of taking away from Traci time as well.

Traci's existence was one of the things that helped Roz'etta and Saoirse bond and start really becoming close friends. Saoirse reaching out to Roz'etta for advice on how to be a sister was a big moment for their paths, so even though Roz'etta's had limited time talking to Traci, Traci still had a big impact.

Well first I need to talk about Starsa

Starsa's biggest moment, to me at least, was when Juliet showed up and Starsa informed us she was supposed to be her ring and that Juliet was slated to be a Star Sapphire until her death made her not eligible to become the love that our sector needed. Starsa was SO happy to see her and she wanted to ask her so many questions. Juliet wrote out a short version of her story for a more accurate telling of what happened between her and Romeo, and then her time came to an end as Eternity was calling to her once more. Starsa was... devastated. She rushed to her side, floating and circlling all around her, until there was no more and she floated through the apparition that was still lingering for a brief moment. Starsa begged Juliet to stay, not to leave her. Starsa had so many questions for this young woman who was set to be her companion, but their relationship was over before it began. Starsa wanted this second chance, to understand what went wrong. Why this happened to her. She wanted to know what Love was from Juliet's eyes. And as she disappeared fully Starsa hung in the air, until she slumped down, defeated. She was sad. No. Starrsa was heartbroken that she was left alone once more. No host, no compatible friend, simply still a ring.

I never expected that a ring could express such loneliness and tug on my heart strings. But here I am

Her reunion with Carol and her excitement made me tear up. Knowing that it's not just the love spectrum she's searching for, but that Starsa herself contains a love for Hal, and how Carol, and the Jordan family mean something to her on more than just an autonomous level. Her return home to her Queen and her most endeared companion as she struggled with the last of her energy was just so touching. It was a nice end to the begining of this arc. Pretty in Pink 3 gave us more questions than answers it seems, but our friend is out of the danger zone.

Traci is really enjoyable. My character Lush had a different type of relationship with her familiar Leroy as he was there for weeks before Traci was picked up. One of Lush's duties is that she runs in the Mess hall when not on missions and Leroy -loves- chips and hanging out in the kitchen. Now Lush is a victim of Zatanna's mind wipings and has become forgetful from this situation. So Leroy asking telepathically in her head for "Chips Please" throughout the day would give Lush mini heat attacks because she would forget and suddenly there are voices in her head. It became a very fun relationship. During this time Leroy said how important Traci was to him and he needed help. It was enough reason for Lush to want to assist in bringing her home, and she did end up on that mission helping make deals to calm the war of the Juarez/El Paso wall.

Traci when in public is a very bubbly, yet fabricated, personality. Lush likes her, she has a level of trust in her, and wants her to succeed. She was in support of her joining the field to expand on her abilities, and when Saoirse was being suspect to Lush she knew what she had to do. She got her cleared to join team Shadowcrest. Traci was a 'more trusted' mage, but this also sent of message to Saoirse of 'dont fuck with me or your friend gets it.' and it made for a very interesting, tense, session even if there was not many interactions between the three.

My favorite scene with Traci personally was having Lush break into her room and wait for Traci to arrive, simply reading on her bed, sending a slight message of 'I can do whatever I want to you.' and scaring her when she entered. She screamed for security but Lush said "If you throw me out you must not care about Saoirse." which bought her time. See Twiggy, Saoirse's familiar, had been snapped on our recent trip and Lush had to bargain with the devil-- err, Blackbriar Thorn, to make things right. Traci wasn't informed yet and she was beside herself, not sure what was going on and very concerned for Saoirse. Lush admitted Traci was better suited to help Saoirse than she was, which Traci took with some pride, but also cautioned, and concerned. It's a very tense relationship on our side of things and it does make Saoirse uncomfortable as well. It's very interesting and fun I think!

Saoirse also got mad that Lush took herself out of that equation. Like, stand up for your status as a bestie.

We do not have much connection, you and I. Still, this encounter feels special. I hope you won't mind if I think of you as a friend.
