How they felt about Otto Warmbier. I suspect, and I may be wrong, that they sing/sung a different tune.

I wonder why that is?

They actually did because North Korea was the big evil. Huge push to bring him back before his death.

tbh my opinion of the Otto situation was more, why on gods green earth would you ever willingly enter North Korea

at least Russia was an ostensibly friendly-ish nation prior to all of this recent posturing and their unjust war

Who?

And Griner put this on herself by bringing hash oil. You'd think being out of America on and off for years would make her understand how different laws are in other parts of the world.

My first thought was literally "Who?" before going to Google. After spending 20 seconds reading wikipedia I can say that TC is making a bad faith argument in trying to draw a direct comparison between what Griner did (something that is still illegal in most of the US) and what Warmbier "did". Did in quotes because there's no actual proof he DID anything, and even if he did what he was accused of (stealing a flyer from his hotel room) it would be a misdemeanor crime anywhere except a fascist dictatorship. The former might not appeal to TC's sense of justice but it is still justice. The latter, to wit torturing a man to death for *maybe* stealing a poster, is not justice in any sense of the word.

That said, Ms. Griner's case is bullshit and hopefully she'll be back stateside soon. It looks like her story will end much better than Mr. Warmbier's

I don't even know where to begin with a response to this. There are so many ways I want to respond, but you literally ran with this in a direction that I feel like we would just go in circles.

And this was the actual point of my topic. Reading local social media comments on news articles, this is generally the response along with homophobia and racism.

We're on the same page I think but honestly your attempt to draw a comparison between the two incidents is in bad taste at best. Also I take back the jab at your intergrity. You've shown considerably more restraint than I expected and I apologize for just assuming this was some dumb trolling shit. CE gonna CE, after all. I'll amend my first post

Fair enough and much respect that. That said, I would disagree (and happy to continue respectable discourse on it) and say it's not in bad taste as it is seemingly comparable situations at it's core. Two countries leveraging foreign travelers "breaking laws" for their own political gain. I mean shit, we have as much proof that she had the hash oil that we did Otto tore down a flag. They are still bullshit laws with obscene penalties.

I would agree with your statement though that her outcome should be better as I would imagine that Russia would never go to the extent that NK did with torture. They also don't have Trump in office to come out with a statement that he trusts no intentional harm was done. Russia was generally too smart for that post Cold War. But Putin these days....

The whole thing is wild with people defending the arrest. It's so weird. What she did would get your average Russian a fine or like 2 weeks, couole that along with the fact that the US has already came out and said that she is being unjustifiably condemned for this and yet you still will have people go so far out of their way to paint her as some awful lawless individual for a small slip up.

It's fucking odd.
