It's supposed to be magic and give you supreme power over all but Aragorn's grandad just cut off big bad Sauron's finger (while half crippled no less) and that instantly destroyed him.

Keep in mind even Pippin would have survived if you cut off his finger and that feels more like a weakness than a strength.

And that big armor wasn't up to much if a sword can just slice through it like warm butter.

Even Green Lantern doesn't die if you take his ring off.

I personally believe it was the equivalent of a miracle that Isuldur was able to cut off Sauron's fingers. Direct divine intervention from the creator.

It was a risk/reward kind of thing. Sauron was super arrogant too and probably assumed nobody would be able to separate him from the One Ring.

i think hobbits had increased perception and could terrify lesser minds like orcs with visions in the books. but the big drawback was still being a huge ass beacon for sauron while wearing it.

Well, he was also a Numenorean, and Narsil was a First Age weapon if I recall correctly. While obviously not of the same class as the Maiar, I think Isildur coming in clutch against an arrogant Sauron was certainly within the realm of possibility. Immensely unlikely, but possible.

I mean, if Fingolfin can fucking gimp Melkor of all things....

What's flawed is the thinking that every superpowered character has to be Goku or Superman. Sometimes when you stab someone in the head or cut off their magic doodad, they're dead. And that's that. A good lesson to be learned and worth trying if you ever find yourself mere seconds away from eating the receiving end of a sword from someone like that.

Men of the first and second age, especially Numenorians, are OP.

I don't remember the scene from the books (was it even depicted in detail?) but the movie shows Sauron breaking the sword before reaching towards Isildur.

He thought he'd won quite handily, especially after spending the last few minutes smashing through the opposing army without a care in the world
