I'm really into folk music at the moment, always been a big Mountain Goats fan and I found an appreciation for the music through Counting Crows' later catalogue.

This is a Swedish musician named Melissa Horn. Some of her music is just really great and vibey, and some of her lyrics remind me of silly English phrases bc she sings in Swedish (one of her choruses sounds like she's saying "we are coming to clean your pool"). But this song is just really sweet and has this atmosphere of yearning to it.

Maria Mena is a Norweigan pop star. She had some international appeal, and she sings in English for the most part. I still think she's incredibly underrated for the way she enunciates her lyrics and the way she'll go on these busy run-off sentences during the verses of her songs.

She's got a lot of really dark songs talking about her history of self harm, eating disorders and parental neglect/abuse. She made a whole album about her divorce which was really compelling because she's going into the fucked up shit she did as well as taking her ex to task for how his actions made their marriage untenable.

This is the final song from that divorce album, which I'm posting because it's been the architect of my own recovery process after my own shit went sideways last year.

Holy shit, I never expected to hear of Aural Vampire here..... ever. Cannibal Coast was my jam 10 years ago.

Awesome! Yeah I go through phases and hadn't listened to Aural Vampire for quite a while but dusted it off for this topic. I discovered the band through my like of Darkwave, such as The Birthday Massacre and the algorithm on YouTube.

Well if that isn't coming through The Looking Glass, I don't know what is.

A couple absolute bangerswell, not head banging bangers, but just great tunes that I've recently discovered.
Coincidentally, these are all from 1977.

Can't find much else on this Latvian band other than that they only recorded one album.
I wonder why their output was so meager; this is some good fuzz-drenched garage rock.

By the way, garage rock is kind of like the daddy of punk rock.
And here's synth punk rock from France that takes the fuzziness to the ocean floor!

Ever heard of jazz-rock? Just like its name states, it's a genre that fuses jazz with rock. But don't think this is that smooth and soothing jazz you'd hear in a lounge or something. No, this blistering hot jazz played with rock instruments.
This Argentinian band recorded only two albums, and this jazz-rock tune from their last has to be heard!

Another band that only recorded two albums before folding. This is folk rock from Norway, with an emphasis on the folk.

When someone thinks of German-language music, I'm guessing they think of Rammstein. Or schlagers (which can be... not terrible). Here's a song from Austria, though. Maybe their approach to music is very different, since this is very melancholic, yet beautiful.

Might be time for a 180 after that downbeat song...
These Danish pop rockers were apparently very popular in their country, and I think this is one of the most uplifting rock songs I've ever heard.
With a name that translates to "the best to me and my friends", why would it not be uplifting?
