I feel that way about old school Simpsons.

Modern Simpsons just looks so "sterile"

It's like old movies

Takes a really special person to capture thet magic in the modern day

The cartoony look of the characters is so jarring with the realist vehicle

The animation could be spotty, but they had the best comedy writers in that Era of TV.

Wish they put that kind of attention to continuity these days

The thing is that all of those look too "clean". That bit of fuzz that older shows had is just much more aesthetic to me. Something about that slight bit of jank with that hand drawn look just does it for me. Slap it on a slightly fucked up, dim CRT and you have a winner.

I do enjoy the new Eva content. I am quite a fan of the series >_> I have a lil invested into it.

They clearly keep trying to revive the old anime style, but I'm sure it doesn't sell as well anymore, and the CG shills just beat the crap out of it, and now that all the Disney stuff is either dead or the techniques are all out in the open, and the adrenaline isn't there anymore for anime as a competitor. CGI is cheaper and more reliable too. And they can expand the techniques instead of being stuck in a box. And anime won anyway, silently, or not so silently, because all these new western cartoons are more anime than Disney and that's been the case for well over 10 years already. DBZ and Pokemon crushed old western cartoons into the dirt. They had to copy them just to stay relevant. Now? They need new anime to look like other new anime, and not have fans just descend into RetroLand after watching it, and the new audience is so wrapped up in the characters, just like old anime fans, they don't always care about quality per se, and they have their own style too. And they're getting better at it.

Anyway. A lot of the really great anime were SUPER high budget like you just don't see in nearly any TV show nowadays. With your 5,000 channels. And nobody buying the TV shows on disc or even digital because they can stream it "for free". So, that old anime looked that way because of budget constraints and time constraints and it took the audience a long time to form a cult following in many cases as they weighed the pros and cons, and I think a lot of times people forget that they go through phases, especially early on with b content, where they tend to hate the thing and struggle with loving it at the same time, and the viewer often wont vocalize this, certainly not in public, and rewatching the thing isn't going to sell any merchandise, and it becomes almost like a film analyst thing. And people mostly just go by what the reviewers say before anything, along with their own idea of what they want, and old school animation doesn't fly on the modern marketing/multimedia platform. Then your audience expects more and you can't give it them .

Bring back glowing blue and red backgrounds.

There's a lot of leeway in OVAs that makes them look better than TV series. Modern OVAs still look good.
