Watching for hazards is more difficult when reversing. There's generally far less risk of these, especially moving hazards, when backing into a space vs when backing out of one. It does make sense.

I feel like backing in to a space is a lot less necessary these days with how great backup cameras are. They provide so much more visibility than I'd ever get from look behind me and checking the mirrors.

I agree though I never do it. I should though Ive noticed that people tend to speed through parking lots which is just insanely fucking stupid.

I usually just park far away from the entrance in an emptier part of the lot, so I can find a parking spot that I can drive forward into and drive forward out of. If no such spot is available, then (as mentioned) backing into a spot is easier than backing out of one.

i was in a grocery store parking lot yesterday and a dude in a lifted truck took like 10 minutes to slowly back out of a parking space like he was trapped in that scene from austin powers with the luggage cart in the hallway, if they have to back in to avoid doing that then i will suffer them taking an extra 20 seconds to back into a parking space

You have more general spacial awareness of activity in the area when backing in as you've been driving in the area. Your brain better registers pedestrians and what cars are about then when freshly getting into the spot. You also have more control over what the space looks like when you are parking compared to when you're leaving as you can pick your spot when you get there but not who shows up while there.

That's my thoughts on it anyway. I don't back into spaces most of the time. I use pull through spots.

The only issue with backing in is if there are a lot of cars on the parking lot and you cause a traffic jam by backing in.

I've seen situations where a car drives past a parking spot (in a full parking lot) with a car behind them. The car behind them sees them drive past and assumes they just skipped that parking spot. But instead, the car in front keeps going, then stops, then reverses to back in. But by that point the car behind pulled forward to take the spot as well. Now both cars are fighting for the same spot.

I find it weird when people reverse into angled parking slots cause those are not at all designed for backing into or pulling forward out of, but with regular parking spots, I think nothing of it if folks do that.

Still safer to back into a spot.

when youre backing out, there is still plenty of room for user error, missing a person on your cam, a car coming through the lot too fast, etc

when you back into a spot, theres unlikely to be any danger like that because youre backing into a rectangle of space you know is empty

That depends on the direction you're driving. If you're going the wrong way, it's easier to back in than go in front first

I did see that once and got pissed off cause I had to avoid a car heading towards me in what was supposed to be a one way parking row.

In all the parking lots that I regularly go to even though the lanes are 1 way they're big enough to fit two cars. IDK why they did that. They could fit much more parking space if they didn't. Maybe it's exactly because of people like me.

There's a lot of those. Some people just don't fucking understand what it means to be driving in a parking lot. There's a special class of asshole that will literally speed up if they notice you're trying to pull out.

You can force people to wait the 20 fucking seconds it takes you to park because you're blocking the road so no traffic is moving while you're parking. It's not true when you're pulling out. People can and will zoom past you.

You can just slowly back out like literally everyone does and traffic stops and also you can literally see people coming and also theyre at fault for hitting you still.

Still not seeing where backing in is any safer if not more dangerous....

You're literally asking why backing into a place where nothing is moving is safer than backing into a place where everything is moving.

And no even if someone t bones you, if it happens while you're pulling out of a parking spot or driveway, you're at fault.

The reason it's safer to pack back into a spot because there's nothing moving in between the two cars parked. If you park normally and try to back out, there's a high likely chance of hitting either an incoming car or pedestrian because they're moving entities. In most cases, you're at fault most of the time if you hit either of them.

No theres not. Theres no damn super busy ass parking lot. If its that busy stopping ALL THAT TRAFFIC for 20 seconds would not be possible. Parking normal takes 5 seconds and backing out has 2 lanes of emptiness because your example of busy parking lots does not exist.

If its that busy then the person behind you will just pull in normal and take your spot.

Dude who said anything about traffic and the parking lot being busy? There's still a larger margin of error parking normally than it is backing in.
