The low wages

Like is a house 20x cheaper in the 1960s that alluring when the hourly wage was 20x lower?

Was there an actual era where the cost of house(or anything really) was significantly more affordable relative to what an average salary for the average person was?

I never see those kind of statistics thrown around

Yes they do. Plenty of people consider purchasing power.

Yes.

I know my dad got paid $50 a week (AUD) as a printer in the late 1960s which is genuinely 20x lower than my weekly wage

So where is the value there? It'd take just as long for him to save the money for a house. Or was my dad especially lowly paid

This isn't the case at all, though, which is exactly the problem. Wages have not scaled with costs. More accurately, you would say houses were 20x cheaper, while wages were <10x lower.

The minimum hourly wage in Australia was exactly $1 in 1966, it's now $21.66

This thread might be pointless as the situation might be a lot worse in the US

I just noticed the AUD. Yeah, USA's got a more problematic situation.

At least our videogames are cheaper.

It was still better back then.

Some old senator was talking about how they made 5 bucks an hour when they were in college. That's like 20 bucks an hour today for someone with no degree and no experience.

Now in 2022 there are people making 11 dollars an hour who have degrees.
