It's kind of crazy that Rockstar has stayed ahead of the curve woth open world games ever since, as well. GTA5 has held up past a whole gen and moving onto another even. RDR2 is still the most advanced open world game still, 4 years (?) After it came out.

They're like what Blizzard used to be. Every game they release is a huge event and becomes the only thing people talk about for weeks, if not months on end.

Yes. My favorite car in the game. The Yakuza version especially. I wish they'd bring the GTA 3 version back in a future game.
I was always disappointed getting a Stinger in other GTA games and seeing how they didn't feel nearly as fun or handle as well.

I remember everyone at school talking about it but at the time I only owned a SNES from my older cousin which I played straight through that gen till I got a gamecube.

Never got the chance to play GTA until San Andreas came out.

I find it crazy that the first 3 3d gta games all came out on the ps2 whereas GTA 5 has been stretched out over 3 gens.

It was a revolutionary game, much like, if not better than, the likes of Zelda 64. Nintendo fans can't tell my any different.

Im having PTSD about how hard drive-buys were on the original XBox. No shoulder buttons, so you had to somehow hold the white or black buttons down AND the shoot button with the same thumb.

Nothing drives down real estate prices faster like a good old fashioned gang war, apart from an outbreak of plague, but that might be going too far in this case.

I had zero interest in it and didn't pay attention to any previews or reviews because I figured it was just another "car game".

Then a student brought their PS2 and the game to home ec on the last day of class, and I was floored by it. I went and bought it a few days later

I remember someone saying if you never played GTA1&2 and saw the previews, you'd probably think it looks alright. But if you played GTA1&2 and knew it was going to be like those games but in 3D, that you knew it was going to be fucking amazing >_>

I had played GTA1 briefly, and even then, I didn't think anything about it. I figured it was going to be like Driver or something with a large city, but with a linear mission structure that blocks parts of it off. Like they had to do that to make it work in 3D.

But then I saw it and was like "wait, it's an entire city with no boundaries, and you can do anything?"

It was mind blowing to me because as a kid I always used to rent GTA2. So I was used to that old school top-down view, and when I saw the first screenshots of the 3D GTA3 I was blown away. Ill never forget getting it and playing for the first time, one of the greatest video game memories I have

I still have fond memories of playing through it with the Pedestrians Riot cheat and just enjoying the chaos. That and tank flying lol.

Also Chatterbox was the best radio station in all the games imo. At least among the talk show style stations.

I discovered that the gangs don't shoot at you for as long as the mission where you have to deliver a car rigged with a bomb across the city is active.
That mission is one of the few that can be replayed. So, I'd often start the mission, drive the car to the garage where the bomb is disarmed, then leave it there and go for a carefree exploring of the city and, most importantly, collect the hidden packages that were deep within hostile gang territory.

Yeah it's a big problem with that game, you get to the point where like more than half the map has hostile gangs shooting at you

This is why it's often suggested that you complete missions like Paramedic asap since Portland is the only map where prior to completing certain missions, no gangs will be hostile towards you. However it does have some cons as well. You really don't get that much time and sometimes the patients spawn too far apart from each other. Especially during the first few levels. And it has some steep hills.

I was able to complete it on Staunton Island as you get more time and the streets are wider and flat. The biggest issue there was the Cartel who are hostile towards you right from the get-go and the high possibility of patients spawning around their turf. However I waited until the Yakuza took over the construction site because then the Cartel will probably be shooting at them rather than you. I also did it prior to completing King Courtney's final mission as that's when the Yardies betray you and become hostile.

Literally 5 of the 7 gangs are hostile to you at the end of the game.

Every gang in Portland is hostile to you (Mafia, Triads, Diablos).
Yakuza is friendly, but the Yardies and Columbian Cartel are hostile in Staunton
Red Jacks are friendly, but the Columbian Cartel is hostile in Shoreside Vale

If you try to save all the side activities to the end of the game, you're just fucked >_> There's no way you're gonna be able to do the Paramedic missions and such

I kinda like how certain areas become too dangerous to mess around in. Liberty City is called "The most dangerous city in America" for a reason. But yeah, it sucks when trying to do certain things.
