Probably the best controls/camera in the series and the fights can get pretty gnarly. Lots of vertical combat which is always fun. Best place to start the series at the moment if you haven't played any of them.

If you like games with a grind where you really feel the difference in skill level between when you start it and when you're playing endgame then it's the game for you. Just keep in mind that the story is basically just a threadbear excuse to introduce you to the different zones and enemies, but 99% of your global playtime in Monster Hunter is going to be killing the same dozen monsters over and over and over to get materials to make armor so that you can kill slightly tougher versions of those monsters over and over and over.

This. It pretty much sucks unless you play with friends to beat really hard ones

My son in law came to visit me from England. I was balls deep in Elden Ring. He suggested I play Monster Hunter World. I tried it an hated it. It is not my style of game. It moves too slow, there is too much pointless dialogue, and I just didnt have any fun. Now he did say I had to get further to enjoy it, but I got too bored in the beginning parts. Just not my style of game. I see its merits, but it is just not for me.

Rise is great. Maybe the fastest-paced and snappinest Monster Hunter has ever felt.

Monster Hunter are not story focused games, the appeal is fighting a Monster, getting the shit kicked out of you, figuring out why you got the shit kicked out of you, learning from it, then killing the Monster. Then perfect killing the monster, getting the materials you need from it, and moving on to repeat the process on the next one. It is a game where you can tangibly feel yourself improving.

Kill monsters to get stronger gear to kill stronger monsters to get stronger gear...

Fun game. Has a bit of a first time learning curve, so it's usually best to start with a buddy to get you familiar with the basics, but luckily Rise is pretty easy to get into compared to other entries.

Yeah, the beginning sections always seem to drag really badly. The early game quests and monsters aren't interesting, and for a game with minimalistic story telling, it can be a bit heavy handed on setting up the reason your character is killing stuff(mostly World specific, as it's the most story heavy one, but a few other games do do too).

The gameplay is fun, there are loafs of different weapons(I think like 15 different weapon types, or close to it). Each weapon changed the playstyle of the character and offers new moves and abilities. It's a very action oriented game that puts you against big monsters(duh).

It's also a very grindy game. There's 2 ways to get better at the game, one is by simply whining your skill against the monsters. The other is to build better weapons and armor, both of which require you to fight a specific monster over, and over, and over again. Then you reach a higher rank and do it all over again. Then another rank and do it again. Then special quests against a different version of the same monster again.

That sounds bad, and get a little frustrating at times, but the game does a good job at balancing it out so it only feels like a chore if you choose to farm the monster. Gameplay is fun, and varied, monsters are interesting and fun to fight, multiplayer is fun too.

But if grinding for better gear against the same monster doesn't sound fun, it probably won't be. This series is very hit or miss with players. Either it's a hit and you love it, or it's a miss and you hate it.

There was a recent demo for the Sunbreak expansion. I don't know if it got removed since the expansion released a couple days ago though. If it's still up you can give it a try. Just be warned the demo fights tend to be more difficult than they are in the actual game.

that is my take
I do not think it is a bad game, just not my style. All my son in law could talk about was how he beat some dragon by himself which apparently is really hard

You whack large monsters with giant sticks. That's what sold it for me.

It's certainly not everyone's cup of tea. But the gameplay is very satisfying and it makes all the grinding you usually have to do pretty worth it.

Yeah dont play Rise, play World.
The perspective is that Rise is for casuals because apparently they added a tool that can instantly cancel out all weapon animations and gives you crazy mobility which also kills the whole point of the bug staff, which was renouned for its movement.

The basic reason you would want to play MH is that its one of the best boss fighting games ever made, but also imagine having to track that boss across a multiple zoned area that usually carries a similar theme, such as volcano, jungle, or basic plains/caves.

The fights themselves are VERY satisfying. One of the biggest weaknesses of melee based combat is game tend to have horrible feedback from your attacks. But in MH, they stumble, flinch, fall over, get dizzy and you can even break or sever parts of the monster!

There is no leveling up but your power is all determined by the strength of your armor and weapons.

Monster Hunter is my favorite game series ever. Don't listen to the folks who say it's slow or clunky, cause while the combat is slower than an action game or other action RPGs, it's like that cause it's a lot more deliberate. You have to kind of commit to your actions, and if you do so at the wrong time or position you're going to get punished.

Plus with 14 different weapon types there's a lot of things to try out, they all play differently.
