All of them I see require one it seems. Im not expecting to go back far but it would be nice if I can have access to a couple hours worth without having to pay extra for it.

I have a ring and I can go back to january and look at any motion that it caught. I you are talking about 100% reviewing any footage then you would probably need a subscription service. I know I can set the distance that my ring can pick up. Right now I have it just for my porch. It can reach the road which is like 20ft in front of the porch. I think it would constantly record if It had continuous motion in front of it. I have not tested it though.

I have the Doorbell Camera Pro as part of my home's Vivint system and I didn't have to subscribe to anything more than what I already had to pay for. I'm looking at it now and its recorded events go back one full month.

If I'm not mistaken, I would need to subscribe to some sort of cloud service to go beyond that.

Thats what Im talking about. Dont need a 24/7 surveillance camera type thing that goes back months, I just want to check footage it picks up without having to pay to do so.

Vivint is a huge scam and definitely requires a sub lol.

I did some research before I bought my Ring and seem to remember there were some options that would save a few days back for free, but they were lower quality. I settled on Ring bc it's like $3/month to save video. But I think you can do a Ring without the sub, and just view live video without saving any of it.

Nest doorbell without a subscription will let you look at 3 hours of notifications and still photos, but not video.

Got a blink with sync module for 40 bucks on Amazon. Apparently the sync module is what I need for local storage and thats all I wanted really.
