Board 8 > What's the best Pokemon knock-off?

Not talking about stuff like Dragon Quest Monsters where the similarity is just in collecting/fighting with critters, but rather games that are obviously Pokemon with the trademark filed off. Stuff like Nexomon, etc.

I haven't played any of them and don't have a great idea of what all is out there, so no poll.

I've only played a bit of Nexomon but you can tell how low thier budget is when playing it

I bounced off Temtem but it was alright

TemTem by far.

That side scrolling metroidvania one looked awesome.

Ive contemplated going through as many of the GBC/GBA era ones as I could find like Telefang, Robopon, Bugsite, Dino Device, etc

I haven't really played any of the blatant blatant ones, but Coromon intrigues me the most.

Isn't this one an MMO? I've heard it's good but I'm a hard pass on MMOs.

Monster Sanctuary? It does and I'll probably play it eventually but it's not really what I'm looking for here.

I played and loved Robopon, but I had literally never heard of the other 3. Im super intrigued.

I've been wondering this too

(really I've been torn between wanting to try Nexomon, Coromon, or Temtem)

Nexomon's fun for what it is. I keep trying to get into Temtem but it's so slow.

I bought Robopon as a kid knowing that it was a blatant and intentional ripoff, but I wanted to see if would be able to enjoy it as a standalone game anyway. And yet I was still surprised by how similar some of the content was (in particular the graphic style, some of the Robopon designs and names, and the structure/progression of the game).

The one thing that was majorly different, the battle system, was very confusing and I don't think that I fully understood it while I played. Also, I never beat the game because I lost my good file due to an unexpected autosave when my friend wanted to see the beginning of the game.

Theyre all by the same company, Smilesoft. None of them were released in English, though a few of them have very low-quality bootleg translations. Pretty much all the games Smilesoft made were monster-collecting/raising, but they shut down when their president was arrested for child prostitution at a junior high school. Imagineer (the Medabots people) bought the rights to their catalog but I dont think they ever did anything with it

i hesistate to say it, but mechanically 200% Mixed Juice is halfway to being a pokemon clone down to its online battles so that's arguably my actual answer

though as far as open clones go...

yeah i thought for a while and concluded that there just hasn't really been a pokeclone that i was way into objectively... (outside of mixed juice)

best clones just aren't as good as the best pokemon fangames tbh
