I said either.
LoZ: You can get stuck in locked rooms where you cant defeat the enemies.
AoL: You can complete palaces without leaving that gem at the end of the palace. You cant return to the palace and you must have used all gems to open the last one.
Doing the Fairy glitch in Darunia places you in the middle of the sea with no possibility to move or save.
LttP: You can freeze the game in so many ways, you can get send to the dark world at the start of the game and be stuck as a bunny forever with no way back to the light world, etc.
LA: You can enter a door in dungeon 4 before you got the required key or ability to leave the room.
You can also get a second shovel after you jave traded it away, which prevents you from picking up the fire rod, which you need later to progress.
You can run out of keys in Dungeon 5 if you open the wrong door.
OoT: That bottle trick.
OoA: Unlike OoT, you can miss a key in the water... Jabu-Jabu's Belly.
WW: Defeating the last boss while getting killed gives you a Game Over. Any further attempts to complete the final boss battle will boot you to a glitched version of the arena where the boss is stuck in his test animation and you can't interact with him or Zelda, leaving you no way to finish the game on that file.
TP: Saving and quitting at the scene where you find the Sky Cannon will prevent you from proceeding.
After crossing the Bridge of Eldin and bombing the rock wall, a piece of the bridge will be warped away to somewhere else. If you happen to save and quit between here and the Twilight, then you can be reloaded on the wrong side of the broken bridge with no way to get back across.
PH: It's possible to use the hammer to enter the Goron Temple without first becoming an honorary Goron. If you claim the pure metal without doing that, then your fairy won't let you leave.
SS: The Song of the Hero quest can be made impossible to finish should the player speak to Golo the Goron a second time in Lanayru Mine, after getting the Thunder Dragon's song, but before going to the forest or volcano regions.
BotW: You can fill your inventory with unsellable armors, making it impossible to get armors that you need to enter places.

You have to have the dungeon-item and place the crystal for the palace to get closed.
If anything, it's better to skip the statue until your levels total 18, and skip the endgame grind.

Get to one of the palaces that got falling blocks. Jump on top of them and activate the fairy spell.
You are now being taken to a glitchy version of the first palace. Complete it, and the palace you started from is now blocked, no matter if you got the dungeon item or not. And if you didnt complete the first palace, it will block that one as well, without removing your gem.

FFVII: take a gold Chocobo into your airship, fly to Wutai. Take gold chocobo back to chocobo ranch, release all the chocobos. Enjoy being stuck.

Now that's a legit unwinnable state.

That one pissed me off so much. It was extremely precise and happened pretty fast (IIRC the way I got it to work was by throwing the boot ahead of the cat more than at it).

That said after KQIII can anything from any other game truly count as maddening? That game really was a league of its own in all respects.

Ya know...I'm starting to think that the Sierra games are ones I wish I hadn't played as a kid, even my beloved Space Quest

Here's the one that fucked me repeatedly as a kid.

In Hugo's House of Horrors 2, if you bump into the side of the bridge (a ludicrously easy thing to do), then you'll drop your matches and get them wet. You need to cross the bridge with these matches to progress. There is no way to dry the matches, nor is there any other way to set fire to the things you need to burn. And the game tells you that you got them wet, but doesn't tell you that it's now unwinnable.

I got past it by dropping the matches, moving 2 pixels and picking them up and dropping it again. Real fun game design.

Most of the Quest games from Seirra. They commonly have unwinnable states based on overlooking something. For instance, in King's Quest VI when you go to the Isle of Mists if you don't pick up everything in the village and leave your game is now unwinnable. If you go back you will get a game over and otherwise you will get stuck down the line.

Yeah Sierra games were notorious for this. For instance in King's Quest 5 you had Cedric the owl who for the majority of the game was useless. At one point in the game you get to an island and have to get him before leaving. Most gamers will probably be tempted to leave him, but if you don't it makes the game unwinnable at the end. That's the only time Cedric actually does something useful and it wasn't even intentional.

Kajagogo posted... Pre-Internet days, if you didn't have the letter attached to the instruction manual in StarTropics, you could not beat the game. Unless you already knew the code.

This was an issue for me since I rented the game back then and it didn't have the instruction manual. But I was still able to play later stages because it had the save files.

Lol, don't think that. Just use it as a way to laugh at the people that think that "Nintendo hard" was a thing or that Dark Souls is hard. Overcoming adversity builds character!

Mega Man 2. If you misused your crash bombs or die halfway through the fight, on that boss, it's game over.

No you can do the shortcut route instead where you only visit the isle of mists once.

The only unwinnable state in 6 is after visiting the beast's garden if you save at a point where you don't have enough time to return with the girl.

Unwinnable states in Sierra adventures is more towards the older shit. The first three space quests were the worst. One of them literally makes you hold onto a fucking thing from the beginning for the whole game except you don't know you needed it until you get to the end and have to redo the whole fucking game.

If you do not pick up the scythe you cannot do the shortcut/bad route. I forgot that you did not need the blanket for that route though I, admittedly, wasn't even thinking about it.

And yeah, the earlier games were bad. Especially KQ3 as of you weren't paying attention to the clock it was trivial to make an unwinnable save.

Not a permanent miss but if you don't look up anything, Dragon Warrior 7 can get you stuck really well.
