It's like an OK RPG.

I played all the way through the second one and I tend to agree. Luca is a cool villain but most of the game just felt forgettable

I only ever played the 1st one, and it was good and refreshing - for some reason I love city builders in my RPG (Breath of Fire 2 and Suikoden 1 both did this).

Never played any others. I always wanted Suikoden 2 for PS1, but the game was on ebay for like $100 as a kid and my parents wouldn't do it.

Wish it were easier to play Suikoden 2. Always wanted to give it a go

I don't see what's that hard to understand, lol. It has a lot of distinctive elements. Even if I didn't like it I'd be able to see why people did.

For myself its a series that was a breath of fresh air. The first game came to me at a time where i was getting tired of all the typical tropes and rpg stereotypes. The story of political intrigue and localized war is far more engrossing than saving the planet etc.

Having no expectations and stumbling upon the first game in a bargain bin was fantastic. The second was basically the same thing but better. Personally SII is my favorite rpg based on my initial experience.

It's a pretty simple jrpg and if someone was told for years that it was the greatest ever then i can understand how their expectations may have built an unattainable experience.

characters and storyline is great. the themes of the games are great.

The music is amazing. I never see it get enough love-- the first 2 games have awesome soundtracks.

Also, unlike other big JRPG series like Final Fantasy, Suikoden all takes place on the same planet during the same chronology, so each games explores a new region and builds upon the shared lore & history.

It's not a good series because it is an example of what not to do in a video game.

Specifically adding way too many characters in it. The average player will get overwhelmed by the 108 characters and drop it. Quality over quantity, always.
