My understanding is you can really only develop the infection when contaminated water travels up your nose.

For sure. And it's not like we can do anything to stop them, so I imagine their numbers increase. An army of amoeba coming at us. But just why so few little deaths? Environmental conditions? Are we polluting all the lakes?
