A robot could do it. And if the truck is self driving then it can run 24/7 without them having to pay anyone. The only costs would be gas and maintenance on the robot

Even fully automated you still need a human in the drivers seat. Now it is very unlikely that the person in the driver's seat can just be any joe shmoe and they will likely need to be a journeyman heavy duty mechanic so that the truck can have on call maintenance.

maybe if the deliveries are just unloading pallets outside buildings but I work in a kitchen and they bring our stuff right in the building. a robot trying to do that would not have a good time

I guess larger cargo like lumber and stuff a robot could do though since it would be done with a crane/lift anyway. but as others said someone still has to be in the truck.

Im 30, and just started my career, if they ever do come, I will be LONG retired, or dead, there are too many variables

and also, even if these things ever did come to the mainstream, there will still need to be a driver in the cab at all times, see planes and trains, both can be 100% autonomous, but there are still pilots and engineers

Exactly and considering commercial vehicles are multi ton death machines if handled incorrectly it would make 0 sense to try and leave them patrolling the highways unmanned.

There's to many variables of trucking for it be fully automated anytime in the near or even far future.

And any examples people see of it today are in a controled and predictable envirements. To which our roads, weather, shipping/reciving yards, traffic or truck stops are far from that. Requiring creative thought and on the fly decisions oftentimes to maneuver.

GPS, even the most modern ones can be buggy, fail, send you don't either a suboptimal path, and or a dangerous, non viable one for trucks. To which a AI may not be able to identify where a human could.

Seems like a really stressful job. Driving in the winter would be hell and dealing in high traffic areas with other drivers that wont let you over. I imagine sleeping in your truck after driving 12 hours a day and only being able to shower at truck stops every so often while eating on the road wouldnt be for me personally. The money is pretty good, but the drawback is youre always working with little time off.

None of these things are inherently limited in machines, though. Odds are, they can be solved. The only good argument I've seen against near future automation is cost effectiveness.

Some 15 years ago, I saw a documentary on PBS on self driving cars, and they came to the conclusion that the technology would never exist for a self driving car to see the road with any semblance of accuracy. They have already been proven wrong, and the tech will only get better.

What? Automated driving as it is right now isn't foolproof, but it's still quite safe for a newer technology. It's only going to vastly improve over time, so the industry will definitely eventually begin to shrink over time.

Doesn't matter if an engine or vehicle is gas, diesel or electric. It has moving parts, it needs maintenance. Or are you under the impression that electric vehicles require zero maintenance ever.

I drove for a couple of years after I turned 21 because I didn't really know what I wanted to do career wise. It's pretty great pay for relatively little training. And depending on the weather and where/when you're going somewhere, it's often a pretty relaxing easy going job. I still miss those 3am summer night drives along rural highways.

Assuming automation hasn't totally taken over, I could easily see myself buying my own truck and becoming an owner operator as a part of semi-retirement once I get older.

They could probably automate some of the trip along the interstate, but I don't know how they can automate city driving unless everyone else's car is automated.

My buddy drives and complains that his truck has automatic breaking or some shit. He told me that the newer automate braking is programmed to avoid hitting the idiot driver that cuts you off at all costs, even if it jack knifes the trailer. Imagine being a trucker and dying in a fiery crash because you couldn't override the automated emergency braking.
