I hear you. I finished Scarface '83 last night. Weekend weddings and other summer events have been stifling my progress.

13/30 movies now. Gonna have to hurry.

Just got 10 left, plus two rewatches.

I actually just started college and am going for Film. They told me they have a whole collection of films that we can watch for free. I'm really hoping they've got the rest of these in there.

I'm halfway through as of yesterday, on pace to meet the deadline nicely.

How's everyone else doing? Anyone not think they can finish by the end of the month?

It'll be close, but I think I can get mine in just before the deadline.

There's 8 left I haven't seen so I should be able to finish, just not sure if I can get to an honest rewatch of all the ~3 hour entries I've seen before. I forgot how long a lot of these are!

Can you extend the deadline to October 10th? Having an extra week + weekend would be huge for me. I greatly underestimated the length of some of these movies.

Not exactly (although I have started Save the Cat on my own) the intro class is more focused on film analysis. After that we go into Production and from there they figure out which area we excel in the most and start taking classes that reflect that. So I imagine those would probably be saved for the Screenwriting classes

You might also want to check out the book George Lucas: A Life. A good chunk of the book discusses how Lucas/Coppola/Spielberg navigated and reshaped 70s Hollywood, and while I imagine the landscape has changed immensely since then, it's worth learning how they survived the business. Highly recommend the audiobook if you have a free credit (usually any audiobook service will give you a free month/free credit for signing up).

Yeah, that's fair, definitely a higher average length overall than most, I'm fine extending until the 10th

1. Introduction to Film/Media Literacy/something like that
2. Philsophy of Film
3. Motion Picture Masterpieces
4. Introduction to Film AGAIN (a different one, had to take this one AFTER taking three other film courses after transferring colleges, and it was almost frustratingly easy )
5. Film and American Society

the 5th one was interesting because I needed one extra credit (literally just one) due to an issue when I transferred colleges two years in, so I did a 1 on 1 summer course for my last credit that was basically just having weekly discussions about film with the head of the English department

Almost done with the 90s.

Side note: going through these in order of release was a good move. It helped show how the genre developed through the decades and how different tropes evolved or were spun on their heads. Also showed how some of the newer movies played it safe and stuck to traditional expectations.

EDIT: Oh, and L.A. Confidential was actually a 1997 movie, not 1995 as it's listed in the original post.

Yeah, I'm currently watching one that feels like it drew influence from Scarface and Goodfellas.

It came out way too late to make this list but 2022's The Outfit is a great take on the organized crime genre and I would've loved to include it here

Want to ask who here has read The Godfather? I did and couldn't get the films out of my mind the whole time. You'd never believe Coppola disdained the novel from how faithful his movies are, though he was probably just putting a class act.

It's actually 20 minutes shorter than Once Upon a Time in America.

When I rewatch The Irishman, I'm gonna treat it like a mini-series and watch it in 70-minute "episodes" over 3 days.

I read it a few years back. The one thing I remember was the stuff about certain peoples private areas. This was not explicitly talked about in the movies.

I tried doing that with The Hateful Eight when Netflix put the extended cut up in 4 episodes, and then I the up watching them all in one sitting anyway

I would love to, but I'm only 14 movies in. My August and September got busy and I completely fell off. I likely won't have a list in unless there's a huge extension (like a full month), but I wouldn't do that for me. Sorry!
