I see it in a LOT of movies, shows, games etc. So can someone tell me why Monkey King(s) are so popular in Asian culture?

I am honestly curious, but not read 30 paragraphs on a wiki curious.

Sun Wukong, the name of the character, is from Journey of the West. Its considered one of the seminal classics of chinese literature. Its basically an adventure anthology with buddhist themes. The character is basically an immortal trickster type in the original story.

If you're not up for a wiki read, overly sarcastic productions summarizes it in several videos.

This is just the first part. You don't really need to watch all of it to get an idea of what its like.

Yeah, was going to say, it's from one of the Four Classics of Chinese Literature. So you'll see it crop up in a lot of Chinese or Japanese stuff.

Two of the other classics (Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Water Margin) have influenced a lot of stuff Westerners have seen more recently as well (like the Romance of the Three Kingdoms/Dynasty Warriors games or Suikoden).
