The Heavenly Single Player Card Based Speed Running FPS For Freaks is finally here! It's always looked good in trailers, but man some places are already calling this a GotY contendor which was a shock when I started checking them out.

Currently averaging an 87 through 22 reviews so far this addictive and challenging Switch console exclusive achieves everything it says it is with style and intensity

Attack of the Fanboy - 5/5
This is a video game about flying around heaven, shooting and dashing through demons, flirting with your other neons, gathering cards that happen to double as weapons, and talking to angels that just so happen to be cats with comically large sunglasses. If any of that sounds even slightly interesting to you, you may have found your new obsession.

Game Informer - 9.5/10
Neon White achieves everything it sets out to with remarkable success. Not only is it one of the most entertaining experiences I've played in years, but it also speaks to a highly specific audience many just don't anymore. It's for weirdos, misfits, and dorks. Neon White is one of the best games of the year, and it'd be a colossal mistake not to check it out.

Gaming Nexus - 9/10
Sitting down for even ten minutes with Neon White makes me feel like I've gotten a lot of playing time in. Stages are fast, and replaying them when things don't go your way doesn't feel like a drag. The addictive nature of Neon White meant I was going back to the same stages again and again until I was able to ace them. The story isn't for me, and feels predictable, but I can see how it might hit the right crowd. The easy to learn gameplay, with the unique weapon cards made for an experience I couldn't get enough of.

NintendoLife - 9/10
From its excellent writing, music, and presentation to its intense and satisfying core gameplay, Neon White is one of the most exciting things we've played all year, and it's a game we can't see ourselves putting down for a long time as we try to best our previous times. It successfully brings together elements from apparently disparate genres in new and exciting ways and seems poised to become the next great speedrunning title. It's one that action game fans and Switch owners in general won't want to miss.

IGN - 9/10
Neon White is everything you want from a speedrunning game: fast, super precise, well structured and built around short and various levels. This alone would be enough to recommend it, but the package is completed with a unique artistic style, a valuable writing and a clearly original and strange game design that mixes together visual novel, dating sim, first person shooter and platformer. Some very small technical uncertainty in the repetition of the attempts does not affect the overall quality.

The demo for this was freaking incredible. Some of the most fun I've had with a game in a while.

Man...Omori is out tomorrow to, Somnium Files almost out.

As long as there's no news about the Switch version suffering the usual Switch problems, I may have to pick this up anyways.

It's an fps so honestly I'd say you should get it on PC even if the Switch version does run okay.

Game runs fine on Switch but the resolution on handheld mode is DOGSHIT.

I don't play handheld mode so no skin off my back, but wow the menu assets are like 240p. Thankfully it's not so bad for the game itself, but the tutorial text stuff is just wild.

I can definitely say I wouldn't want to do the final level from the demo on a controller but if that's what you're used to then maybe it wouldn't be that bad? I exclusively use M+K for fps games so I personally feel like I have a lot less control with a controller.

Controller works well for 90% of single-player FPS experiences I'd say, but Neon White does sound like an experience that would benefit from KBM.

Interesting. For some reason I thought it was something that focused more on movement than precise aiming.

i actively didn't like the bad anime writing and plot presentation in the demo so this is still probably not for me but otherwise yeah definitely seemed like a good game (even if, for its own originality, card systems being integrated into games of other genres is has become so common to the point of total oversaturation already. like i feel like give it a year and people probably won't be as kind on it as they are now...)

Update: this game is awesome. So much fun to play.

I wouldn't really count this game as having a "card" system either. It doesn't feel like any card-based game I've played. Sure, the guns are represented in card form, but... they're the same as guns in any game with guns.

now that I'm done with TMNT I'm gonna try to squeeze this in before Sonic Origins is out

It's real good. And yeah I would hate to play this on a controller. Not because aiming is precise (it's pretty generous), but because you need to swing wildly from one direction to another to speedrun.

pretty amazing how having even one person on your friends list with a time better than yours can motivate you to keep trying to shave seconds off

as soon as I got farther than anyone on my friends list, I had no motivation to retry beyond just getting Ace times, unless I saw a major area for improvement.

Damn it. I dont have power I've been working to stay ahead of my friends list.

That said, the last couple sets of missions are bigger but i dont think as fun as the first portion of the game. The simpler movement abilities are fun and provide some interesting and thoughtful choice. The stuff you get later on does alot more but never feels as good to use.

That said i managed to finish up the game with every gift and platinum time last night.

Yeah the level "Bolt" was the first time I really felt this. It was so weirdly laid out I still don't know what the "basic" intended path is, I restarted it like twenty times before I found anything that worked at all and then the level hint revealed I was already doing what it suggested

Some of the marked shortcuts in the later levels skip necessary enemies and are nowhere near as apparently useful as they are in earlier stages.

The final level of mission 1 felt really open and unstructured like that - I was surprised that the final level of mission 2 was super linear instead. I really prefer the linear ones.

Yeah, I think the later weapons are good, but the later levels get a little long. I like them being briefer.

Incidentally, if people like this game and want more like it, I'd recommend checking out Cloudbuilt and Severed Steel. Both of them are fairly different, but have the same sort of feel. Cloudbuilt's a speedrunning platformer more based on movement than weapons, while Severed Steel is based on combat but gives you a feeling of powerful speed imo. Cloudbuilt's the more similar of the two, I think I'd say?

Any case of that I've come across you can just shoot whatever you skipped from a distance, either right then during the skip or at some other point later in the level

Yup. Some of the later ones are pretty hard to execute those shots, though.

As of last night i had reclaimed all of my times.

I dont have great times on the later levels due to competition not existing.

Only done mission 1 so far but I'm going to be playing lots more this weekend. Can't wait to get to some of the levels show in the last stretch of the demo, the very last one there gave me Celeste levels of euphoria when I got the ace.

I love the long-distance shot optimizations that I've come across so far. It turns the game from following the enemies moving mostly forward, to getting enemies into your line of sight while moving in a totally different direction.

parrying a shot with your sword not only reflects it back to its source, it also gives you a very slight speed boost

This appears to be the case with hitting bullets in general? Doesn't appear to have to be tied to the sword, I'm getting them consistently with guns.

I just barely managed to beat your time on this one, holy crap what a cool level

Oh cool i didn't put a lot of work into that one i can do better.

Mission 8 and on are definitely getting too long. But it doesn't feel too bad. Just takes longer to get into the groove of each level. Still fun to optimize once or twice.

You guys definitely haven't been spending time on these lol, almost every one I get 1st place.

I've got a specific friend whose time I always try to beat but once I've got that I move on. Looking forward to returning to all of these after I finish the game and really optimizing and matching up against everyone else's times!
