juneteenth was largely confined to texas where it originated until recent years; my folks grew up in the south and weren't aware of its existence before moving to texas in the 1970s

I'd blame that more on the south for oppressing knowledge it finds unfavorable. I'm in Cali and my city has been celebrating it for as long as I can remember.

No, you needed to politely decline, saying "I appreciate the offer but white people can't celebrate Juneteenth, and as always white people know better how you should handle yourselves and your culture."

I've seen worse takes last year when some people demand July 4th be removed and declare Juneteenth the new Independence Day.
