My mom's into astrology. She doesn't believe its literally true, reading people's astrological charts is just one of her interests (she's also into jungian psychology and personality typing). So I've heard a fair bit of her talking about it.

It makes sense to me that it became a thing. Its obviously bullshit though.

Babylonians invented astrology, I think people who do readings just interpret the stuff they wrote, kinda like Tarot, but I'll ask my mom when she wakes up from her nap and post her response.

Let's say your mother, due to some relevant reason, induced labor four weeks before your due date.

What's your "true" sign and why is it dictated by when you're ejected from the womb?

Didn't it turn out a few years ago that people discovered there was actually a 13th sign and in essence changed the signs for quite a few people? And then astrology enthusiasts just ignored it lol

Implication is that the stars/sky is not ordered as we are currently told. Multiple reasons to punt on that information.

Astrology is the fake one, right.

Astrology and astronomy used to be the same thing 4000 years ago.

Astronomers took only the math shit from astrology and ran away with it, and that's the foundation of modern day astrophysics.

No there's no 13th sign. An astrological house is defined as the constellation contained in a 30 degree arc of the sun's path in the sky. There's only room for 12.

@MICHALECOLE

So yeah I asked my mom and I was basically correct. All of the symbology and meaning was determined millenia ago, and modern astrologers are basically just doing interpretative readings, similar to Tarot. There's different systems as multiple civilizations came up with their own versions of it.

Basically ancient astrologers conducted mass surveys of birthday & times & the positions of the stars at that time and started noticing patterns. They then concluded that positions of the stars during your birth could predict your future.

Some people at work are big into it and it's like... half our company seems to have birthdays in a 2 month span and they have all kinds of personalities. Clearly these signs are not as eerily on point as you say they are. Or they're so vague that any sign can describe you if you ignore the parts that don't.

It's the latter. A full horoscope is going to be so full of contradictory information it literally can't ever be wrong.

"Hmm let's see here I'm a Sagittarius and Mars is X degrees means I'll be happy today but Venus is Y degrees which means I'll be sad and mercury is Z degrees means I'll be neither."

That's more like news paper horoscopes. Its bullshit, but its a bit more in depth than that. Old school astrology is basically personality typing mixed with Tarot. Your sun sign is sagitarius, which tells you X about yourself, while your moon sign is gemini, which tells you Y. The astrologist might then give you some advice or a prediction something based on what they read in your chart.

Nah. News paper horoscopes rarely have more information than your sun sign and it's usually wrong. Astrology is at heart a way of trying to predict the future.

You can get a pretty decent chart here that gives way more information than most people even care about unless you really believe in the stuff.

How is that a formal fallacy though? I don't believe in this woo but if patterns were seen how are the committing a logical fallacy

Make sense I think would be an exaggeration, but arguing that the gravitational pull of planets somehow affects the baby humans at the time of birth is probably the closest to rational explanation you could get.

Im a fan of astrology, but I dont put any genuine weight in it. I just think the (admittedly manipulative) wording can be useful to bring attention to things I wouldnt otherwise think about.
