The problem with Marvel properties now is EVERYONE has quips, regardless of the rich history of the source material. It has never felt right for Thor and Captain America to crack jokes.

It definitely didnt start with Marvel, but Whedon brought that Bufy everyone is clever dialogue to the Avengers and now everyone sounds like the same character.

The very serious Thor had his time but people didnt like it.

And Captain America makes like 5 jokes total across the entirety of the films. Not every character is a quip machine people assume.

Which is more quips than in his 70+ year history prior to the first Avengers movie.

Not the hugest comic reader, but does he never crack a single joke? Even Batman jokes on the occasion.

Rarely, Cap and Thor are both known for their serious demeanor. Its the same philosophy of if everyone is a star, nobody is a star. If everyone is clever, nobody is clever. Its very lazy writing to have everyone have quips, that isnt how it works in real life either.

Of all the legit criticisms with the MCU, the complaint about quips in those movies really is blown out of proportion to such an annoying degree.

the quips are annoying AF. They aren't clever or funny most of the time. And the other problem isn't just quippiness. It's bathos they drench their movies in. (bathos is an effect of anticlimax created by an unintentional lapse in mood from the sublime to the trivial or ridiculous.)

basically whenever the movie is about to allow itself to be earnest, it steps back and makes a dumb quip or awful joke because it won't allow itself to be earnest. likely partly because the writers are trying to come across as self-aware of how goofy superhero stories are, and partly because so many of stan lee's characters are just so similar to each other -- quippy, american wisecracking humor.

ultimately it makes the writing (AND HUMOR) in their movies feel very samey to a lot of people, including me.

More than enough that I can't count them all. I agree that making jokes isn't his thing. I don't agree that him caring a joke at all is too much. I can agree the MCU is a particularly joke heavy version of the Marvel Universe, sometimes more than I'd like.

The Brubaker Cap I imagine doesn't joke at all, but the Stan Lee Cap was probably a bit more chipper on average. And in the 80's everyone did a few one liners here and there.

Also back to the bathos thing for a second. This is another good example of people attributing problems to the MCU as if they invented them. Again to the point of this topic.

Lets use Die Hard again as the example

This is literally a thing thats been happening in movies since as long as movies have been a thing.

The characters are cracking wise the entire movie even after people are being shot and killed. And then after all is said and done, hostages have died. The terrorists have all died. The FBI agents are blown up in a helicopter. Every single hostage is walking away with PTSD and trauma. Were still making jokes and driving off into the sunrise.

Movies have always been at tonal odds with what happens in the films vs what emotional state the characters are actually in.

sorry for not singing the praises of a 2-and-a-half hour superhero movie where any dramatic tension is undercut by shitty one-liners, that also somehow looks terrible despite having a budget of like 100 million dollars

Again, please provide examples. I would also like examples of a quippy Thor. One of the main reasons Hercules was such a foil to Thor was their demeanor.
