Im not saying its 100% similar, but mens formalwear has typically been dress pants, a dress shirt, tie, and jacket (vest optional) for over a century now. You could make a case that it goes back further than that, but at least about 100 years ago, it looks fairly similar to what we wear today.

Fashion is constantly changing, but this item has been fairly consistent for a really long time.

If you consider the bow tie as a part of common fashion, you can go back over 150 years:

About the only change is that it used to be common for a dress hat to be worn when outdoors as well. It just seems odd to me that this has been so consistent.
