Not having to even try to port it to previous gens would have opened up so much time and resources towards making it the kind of game it is now.

I played it on PC at launch, which was a lot less buggy than the console versions. It was OK and the main plot (Silverhand) actually was pretty good, but the mechanics and general underlying RPG stuff felt (and still feel) half-baked.

It has a veneer of a game with more depth than it actually has. It would've benefitted from less breadth and more depth.

I think it probably would have been more critically successful if it didn't have last-gen versions. I don't know if that would have translated to better sales, though.

If there's one thing we've consistently learned over the past few decades of these kinds of games, it's that games that try to do everything often do a bunch of things poorly. It's better to do one or two things exceptionally well than a million things in a mediocre way.

Every once and a while you have a game that gets everything right (Skyrim) but they are by far the exception.
