It's FTP but if you're you're actually getting interested in it I would recommend buying premium on a month-by-month basis so that you're mid-game progression keeps up smoothly. Unless you get really into the game for more than just a couple months, don't concern yourself with premium vehicles really (Unless you get one for free, but good luck with that). I always preferred the Air Battle to the Land Battle personally, but imo the game faces balancing issues at the higher technology levels due to the dominance of air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. That still means that about 75% of the tech trees are pretty fun to play, though.
