Dont hear it talked about much anymore tbh.

NGL I enjoyed the game considerably less than I remember on my Legendary run due to the buggy af cover mechanics, unreliable squadmate AI and tedious hacking/scanning minigames. The game felt so damn sloppy, mechanically. Don't remember it being that bad.

Hacking and scanning stuff was a lot better with regard to when it came out but a lot of games have definitely done quality of life improvements to things like that so it feels clunky in comparison.

The game was fine, but I still missed the RPG elements from ME1 that they took out.

While all this is true, and despite the companions side missions almost always having to do with some sort of daddy issue, I was mostly fine with it. It just reminded me more of Star Trek.

I'm replaying it right now. I'm still at the beginning, so I can't really say how I still feel about the game. I just remember loving everything Mass Effect back in the day.

I played through the LE recently and I loved every second of ME2.

The Asari sidequest was kinda weird. Like, just randomly having the option of "hey, let me kill my comrade so I can fuck her sister who we are chasing because she has magic sex-murder powers"

I always thought that story was a big downgrade from ME1, and I think this has been a common opinion since the game came out. I did enjoy ME2s gameplay more than ME1, but I don't know how well it has held up on the front.

I remember it distinctively.

The very initial response was overwhelming positive. And then the dust settled and people really started to hate it out of nowhere. Complaining it didnt push the plot forward (short sighted criticism imho).

And now I think were far enough away from it where the haters got bored and left and all that remains is positive vibes. For the most part.

The Collectors didnt deserve their own game and i think that definitely hurt 3 as a result.

I think as the hysteria over ME3's ending has died down it's other elements have become more appreciated and in turn that indirectly affects ME2's standing, because the elements ME3 gets right are mostly improvements on things that ME2 did differently from ME1. So when ME3 surpasses it and it doesn't have the great elements of 1, ME2 is left with little to distinguish itself. Not that there's nothing. The enemy variety in 2 is amazing. The character ensemble is still the strongest in the franchise (though even this is hurt by ME3's better NPC interactions) and the visual setup with Cerberus and the Illusive Man is still the best. ME1 and 3 look rather drab and gray for the most part in comparison.

It's just a shame that ME2 doesn't manage to tie its great elements into a cohesive whole rather than feeling so episodic.

I always found me2 to be a downgrade with powers. And since the le improved me1 gameplay meanwhile me2 didn't see any changes it's much easier to see it as a weaker entry.

That said the squad and the loyalty missions are still some of the best aspects of 2.

ME2 is still the best game in the series.

Maybe I'm not remembering right but I thought people hated ME2 when it first came out. I remember lots of people complaining of how "streamlined" it was and how it took out a lot of RPG elements from the first game and the overall story wasn't as good as the first one.

Not really, I think that's really cool and novel actually and fitting for the middle chapter of an us-against-the-ancient-menace story
