Ideally the pieces would be made of wood or metal but plastic works too

I would design them myself in detail.

Would I be able to 3D print it? Are there places I can go to do this?

3D Printer. They have really gone down in price and there is software and there are videos and online handbooks Your own printer lets you try stuff out.

This. If you don't like the "layered" look of the result, look up acetone smoothing. I recommend the "vapor chamber" method personally.

Obviously lol. Nah it was just me messing around to make the most convoluted character I could.

Eh, its a cool site but I have to go with their templates. I want to completely design it myself.

You can 3D print metal. It's kind of a premium but you can do it. You'll probably pay about $300 more for this.

You can't 3D print wood but they sell PLA filament that have wood dust inside of them that make them feel more woody and less plasticy.

Metal it is the. Cost is not an issue. But I rather outsource the 3d printing rather than buy a printer myself since I won't use it much.

@Tyranthraxus@Smashingpmkns

Do you actively do 3D printing? I got an original Prusa Mini which works but I am determined to set it up myself. It is amazing how many mistakes you can make with something basically fool proof. I was trying to callibrate the first layer with the Wizard and then found out I have to slice my own first layer because .25mm nozzle and the Wizard assumes .4 nozzle.

I don't but I have a friend who I did a lot of d&d stuff with who 3D printed everything.

RE: can you choose only one layer to print
Yes you can! Load the model into PrusaSlicer and use the 'Cut' function (left side in the 3D editor view). Specify the first layer height, select just 'Keep lower part' and click 'Perform cut'.Jan 17, 2022

What software can I use to design my figures for 3d printing?

I used to be very good at Photoshop and I love been sketching my entire life, so I'm not a total newbie when it comes to art and design.

Blender is good to start with for practicing free 3d modeling. And it can export to the STL file format you need for printing.
