never used it before. decided to take on the planning for an event in a few months

i was about to book three nights over labor day. but i had a question about the house so i contacted the host

the response was "actually i only do full weeks during the summer"

so why the fuck did airbnb suggest the place at all when i typed in the dates, eh????

thank god vrbo had an alternate spot that looks to be a little better

AirBnB should be outlawed.

It's really bad for housing prices and availability.

I've never had a problem with AirBnB. Their prices have always been *much* lower than Vrbo, as well.

Though TripAdvisor does give it a run for the money in pricing.

---

On the other hand, I've never used AirBnB to book a place stateside. Just overseas.

Airbnb is awesome for people who want some seclusion away from a hotel while on vacation or to plan a big get together. The only thing that sucks is the fees theyve been adding up when you go to check out which now make hotels the cheaper option.

Will never use AirBNB again after I almost fell victim to this scam:

https://www.vice.com/amp/en/article/43k7z3/nationwide-fake-host-scam-on-airbnb

which happened two years after Vice ran this expose and Airbnb has literally done nothing to fix it

fortunately I had the foresight to smell something fishy and stay at a backup plan, but they made it super frustrating to get my money back and the only thing they offered for basically stranding me in a random city without lodging was a coupon to be used within a month

fuck em

I read the Vice article given by TheGoldenEel.

Airbnb gets a "paper trail" for scams like the above or can implement one. There should be an entry in airbnb system when and why a switch is made: It is easy to see who is always making switches.

It is easy for airbnb to demand a photo copy of titles. Then when there is a complaint from a renter airbnb can investigate the validity of the title.

This is a start and took me 5 minutes to think of.

Yes but all hinges on one notion that will never happen

The notion that airbnb gives enough of a fuck to bother

Hmm. That's why all the AirBnB rentals I used in the EU tended to be okay (ie: they matched the pictures). The countries actually require the renter to register their rental property with the government, much like the proposed San Francisco legislation.

yea im 100% pro hotel in most instances but this is for a wedding in the middle of god damn nowhere so what few hotels there are are crazy expensive and not worth it for those of us coming up stag. even if you divide by two for room sharing.

I've never had a bad experience in at least a dozen bookings. IME they are cheaper than hotels and higher quality, but I might be biased after having worked in hospitality.

It probably takes a bit of discernment when choosing where to book, however, and i basically only stay at ones with hot tubs, which might skew toward higher quality.

I've heard that the quality is based on if the owners live on the property. If they do, they have a vested interest in keeping up the property if only for themselves. I've also heard horror stories where a holdings company owns the property and lets it go to seed because no one goes to check on it. The listing looks cheap, but they price gouge the customer with a bunch of deposits and hidden fees.

Do any of these hidden fees come after booking? Or just like taxes and service fees and whatnot

They dont give a fuck because it doesnt matter to their business model

9 times out of 10 people who are scammed will just deal with it because they have nothing else to do.

airbnb didnt even get back to me on my complaint until the next morning even though they assured me they would get back to me same day (since, you know, I needed somewhere to sleep)

Basically they just take a hands off approach to scammers and only address it when enough people complain

I 100% agree. People need to be prevented from starting these schemes that involve buying property to essentially rent it or timeshare it. This needs to be outlawed, house flipping needs to be outlawed, after being purchased you should legally be required to wait ten years before renting it or making it an Airbnb.

We have got to stop this and make homes available for regular people, like theyre supposed to be. Every property is being grabbed up by corporations to where there arent enough homes to BUY.

We. Dont. Want. To. Rent. Personal property is not something that should be exclusively for the rich.

Well, if you'd like to play in Monaco, but really can't afford 400 euro/night for the cheap hotels...

...you can stay in an AirBnB right across the "border" in Nice, France for a LOT less.

The problems that airnbnb causes with affordable housing may have a solution. Nothing ever passes for constructing affordable housing but cities might be willing to build affordable hostelries for tourists to "stimulate the tourism industry."

can you stop?

Im a high school drop out, that has been homeless, and doesnt have family for help. I bought a house and I plan on renting it out when I get promoted and move.

You dont have to be rich to own a house, and stop thinking that everyone who rents a house is some sort of millionaire.
