as for kpop's popularity: the korean government sinks a ton of money into exporting it, mostly to poorer countries in southeast asia and south america, where it immediately takes over the youth culture due to immensely higher production value compared the local media industries.

it remains fairly niche in the states and western europe since that production value difference doesn't exist in those places.

well there's other reasons too. the west basically gave up on groups in favor of solo artists, so there's a marketing vacuum for cutesy boy-bands that specifically BTS managed to fill.

and i think that's an often-overlooked aspect of their popularity right now. all these thinkpieces about some grand korean takeover of pop culture kinda fall apart when you realize 95% of the interest is centered on literally just one group. it's not because of where they're from, it's because they started singing in english, ditched the spiky hair and gold chains for bowl-cuts and suits, and right-place-right-time'd their way into the hearts of late-2010s middle school girls.

its why someone like Doja cat and Jack Harlow arent considered industry plants for the organic (TM) marketing behind them.
