Prices keep going up, so getting some extra miles now is cheaper than getting miles later

That.... isn't what 93 octane gas does.

You know what? Whatever. It is your money.

On a full tank I get about 25 miles more with 93 octane.

Even if this is true, I doubt whatever you are driving only gets 25 MPG. At best you're breaking even if not losing out on price per gallon. But you do you.

Funny I did the opposite. When gas was cheap I bought 94, but switched to 91 after Putin decided to be a goof.

Difference is higher octanes actually have an effect on my car. Have serious doubts TC is in the same position.

Diesel is like octane 23 or something like that and you will definitely fuck up your engine with misfires unless it's a diesel engine.

Your driver's manual for your car tells you what grade of fuel you need to use. Use that and only that ever.

motors work with explosions at precise times. higher octanes help these explosions explode at the right time.

No they don't. Look in your driver's manual and it will tell you what octane you require.

Engines use a kind of bicycle pedal looking contraption to pump cylinders. When one goes up the other goes down. The speed at which this happens is regulated by the octane of the fuel based on the engine specifications. In order to actually work as intended, the engine expects a specific octane of fuel. If you don't get it, you get what's called a misfire which is where two cylinders try to go up at the same time. If this happens too often your engine breaks.

Read the driver's manual of your car to figure out what octane you need and use only that octane.

but only if the engine is built with that in mind.

if your car was made for regular octane gasoline, putting higher octane gasoline isn't going to do anything. however, if it was made for high octane, and it doesn't get it, it's a) gonna get less gas milage or b) get less horsepower because the computer will sense it and adjust

I don't think higher octane gives you more mileage >_> I think it just runs cleaner through your car, with some cars requiring it.

I know at least in my old car that did require it, I would get way better gas mileage when using it vs the few times I was being a cheap bastard and used regular lol

Pretty sure it doesn't have much of a difference on cars that don't require it

Higher octane gas does not affect gas mileage. Lower grades of gasoline commonly have ethanol added which premium octanes do not. Ethanol gives you less gas mileage. That's probably why you've noticed a difference.

So it's like, some octanes are better for some cars, or is it a tiered list where the highest octane is best for all cars. And is it just a matter of putting the right octane means not need to take the car to the garage as much?

Engines are designed to run on a specific octane and only that octane. Look in your driver's manual to figure out what octane you need. Failing to use exclusively that octane can both break your engine and void your engine warranty.

If you modify your engine with a supercharger or something else, it's on you to understand how that changes the fuel requirements.

Vast majority of people only need the regular. If you have a sports car like a Corvette or something you might need premium. Putting premium in a car that wants regular can cause misfires. Gasoline is not a "you get what you pay for" product. Specific octanes have specific uses.

I just use rocket fuel.

But seriously, it has a negligible effect on gas mileage. Higher octane gas prevent engine knocking from early fuel ignition, which can fuck up your engine.

It was recommended to use a higher octane fuel once when I had a fuel pump replaced on my old Grand Am, but other than that, use what the manual says. There's really no benefit to using a higher octane gas in a car that is specified for regular.
