A nice guy and pretty good at what he sets out to do but hard work, always talks business and most of that talking is relaying Jedi council lines. He lets Anakin go over the edge, maims him and doesn't even finish him. Come on Obi Wan is he too far gone or not? He was like the second best they had to settle for after Qui Gon, who should have been training him was killed. I know there's a clip out there where Anakin talks to force ghost Qui Gon and he treats him with some reverence unlike with Obi Wan where they're basically bros and they banter it up. The New Hope bit with the prequels as context always felt like personal atonement to me more than a noble sacrifice, like it's his personal closure that he probably feels he deserves now that his task of getting Luke started is pretty much done. It's less a sacrifice in the long run since he already knows he'll be able to become a force ghost. That and the way he comes up with a nicer way of telling Luke about Anakin, leaves a whole bunch of stuff out, probably not proud and doesn't like to remember it. Besides they incinerated that last bit of the original movies, Palpatine either lived or was a clone, something something Exogol something Snoke clones.
