Had to let my cat out.

My cat brings me snakes when he goes outside. 9/10 times their still alive.

The negative impacts humans cause is much more significant is what I'm trying to get through your thick skull.
Cats being let outside is insignificant.
The view of the U.S. has always been lock everything up so whatever.

This is dumb, domestic cats should not be left to harm native fauna. Humans do enough damage without adding the damage their pets do the environment.

Cats need to roam as other people have said. They arent like dogs where its fine to keep them inside all day. Having said that, less people need to own cats if this is a thing we care about

I know some cats that are in the streets that wouldn't kill any birds, heck I know of some cats that they can be inches away from birds or they can sitting in a bench and the birds are on the grass and they still don't attack.

I know someone was feeding breads to the birds, the cat went to were the birds were but instead of attacking the birds, the cat tried to eat the bread which he didn't like and walked away.

I think it is the young cats or kitten that attacks birds.

You don't know what it's doing when you're at work or at 3AM or when it's bored or in a bad mood.

You remind me of those guys who say "Oh my dog would never do that." and then follow it up with "Well he's never done that before." once he does it.

The average life expectancy of an indoor cat: 13-17 years.

It really sinks in, when you watch 5 cats take turns dismantling a squirrel.
I watched as a litter of 4 took turns running around with it, as mama cat kept stealing it away.
Then one ate half of it including the skull in its entirety, another ate the other half including the pelvis.

All that remained were the hind paws and a damn fluffy tail. Then they kept the tail as a toy for a few weeks in the yard. It was great.

In not even a year I've seen a few shrews, a mole, a bird, and like 8 squirrels. That I know about.

Did you read the bottom quote of my post? I said I think young cats and kitten might be the one that hunts birds. I did see young cats try to hunt.

However the elder cats not really, no matter how hungry they were.

Just because you didn't see it, doesn't mean it didn't happen
Just because you did see it, doesn't mean it's the only time that it happened.

Both those young and old cats probably killed a ton of wildlife and you just didn't see it.

Obviously, and I agree that cats should stay in the house no matter what country you're in.

I was just pointing out the silliness of neccis' reaction.

I think most cat experts recommend keeping them inside anyway. Dunno where that one goober is getting this 'need to roam' thing from but my cat sleeps most of the day and seems perfectly content to sit on my for the rest of the time.

The idea of suburban cats destabilizing ecosystems is funny though. Perhaps it is the suburb itself that has already destroyed the ecosystem that should be more to blame.

Explain this to me, the elder cat was really hungry and you can tell by the way a cat meows and how fast the cat eats. Even though the cat was hungry, what was stopping the cat from hunting the bird? The cat had the chance to kill but didn't do it.

I used to see the cat everyday and not once did he kill. Maybe when he was younger yes, but not in his old age.
No one saw that cat hunt, heck at one point he was skin and bones, that is how skinny he got. Then people decided to feed him. Then thanks to people like me and everyone feeding he was ok.

Why would the cat go for the bread to eat, instead of eating the birds, even though the cat was hungry? The cat saw he didn't like bread and walked away, even though there was loads of birds eating and he was near them all.

Well-fed cats kill more than hungry cats do. Cats don't kill for food, they kill for fun. A hungry cat is less likely to waste energy.

I know what a cats looks like when he wants to hunt for fun, seen it in young cats. However this I have never seen it in elder cats.

Regardless if they are fed or not, elder cat doesn't seem to find hunting fun.

I have a lot of birds in my area. Part of this is because there are also coyotes.

Does the UK not have coyotes?

My mom lives in a neighborhood that had a lot of outdoor cats. She saw them all the time. A coyote moved in this winter. She no longer sees any outdoor cats.

Creatures go extinct in the wild as well due to over eating from their predators. It isn't limited just to human activity.

Cats kill other species when the cat is allowed to roam freely. True, they share that trait with humans, but they are not humans. Sure, we can look at ways to curb our population and our actions, but that deserves a different thread and its not like we cant also address the cat problem. I think some of you guys just love cats like theyre humans or some other nonsense.

Actually that figure is statistical error. Murdercat Georg, who kills over 238 million animals every year, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.
