with TLJ Ive seen it specifically on twitter, resetera and certain subreddits. to be fair i would also blame the fact that every time some new shitty version of something comes out like Halo or Cowboy Bebop or WoT or whatever, the same culture vultures latch onto it and dilute legitimate complaints with their own objections like "i have to see black people in this and it makes me mad" and the people that are mad about it don't do enough to distance theirselves from that.

but in all honesty, its still really weird and unfair to blanket all complaints like that. even in social justice friendly areas i always see people feel like they have to preface their criticisms about things with "im not a freaking CHUD but" out of fear of immediately getting lumped in with shitty people

Boyega was screwed over with Finn's direction. But fans also harassed Tran so badly she needed therapy (Wookiepedia had to lock being able to edit Rose's entry as well).

So just because they dropped the ball creatively, that doesn't put it in the same camp as outright racism

When the Force Awakens trailer dropped there was a s*** load of racism towards the black stormtrooper. (Theyre all supposed to be clones!!! Reeeeeeeee!!).

I kinda feel like this time they inadvertently caused controversy by being preemptive instead of responding to controversy.

One the other hand? Disney has pioneered everything from traditional animation to computer imaging, with more than a few classics under their belt in just about every department imaginable. Now that they have Lucasfilm and Marvel, you'd expect to see some pretty wild stuff....

.... but we mostly just got a streaming service with like one really good mini-series

And everything ends up being super PC, as Disney has yet to fully escape their reputation for chauvinistic content of days past

And considering it's a company that evolved out of the roughly early 1900s (1923?) and is just now approaching 100 years old and evolved literally through the age where the highest number of technological advancements in the recorded history of man ever happened, they will never escape the cultural problems of the past. So all they can literally care about is money. And to do that, they must adapt with the times, the same way their old stuff pandered to the times of a past that many want to forget, alter, rewrite, or critique.
