Genesis did have a few amazing RPGs, such as Phantasy Star 4, but the SNES just had so many amazing RPGs.

RPGs are about one of the few genres that transcend time, and are regularly played even years after other genres of that time are not ~ except a few choice games from that genre.

Genesis had way better action games. Ranger X, Dynamite Headdy, Gunstar Heroes, etc.

The SNES was better but Sonic 2/ S3&K stuck with me more than any SNES game

I'm an old veteran in console wars.

I had a Sega Genesis and I liked it a lot, but I think the SNES has an overall better lineup.

Both are great tbh. By the end of their cycle I was playing most of my games on PC anyway.

SEGA always wins the music award.

If you're just talking the North American game libraries it's probably a tie.

If you add in the Super Famicom library though, the SNES absolutely pounds the Genesis into submission without even breaking a sweat.

*shrug* The machine was better.

SNES's only edge was that it's larger color range made for some prettier games and it had more RPGs (but they weren't all quality). But unfortunately, in terms of performance and response time to what the games were actually trying to do on screen, the SNES was sluggish as fuck while the Genesis is running at roughly double the speed and all the games were way more responsive. You can primarily see this in the Mortal Kombat games. The Genesis version always runs better.

Plus, Genesis games as noted elsewhere, just produced banger after fuckin' banger when it comes to music.

I don't get the "better music" argument that Genesis fans use. The SNES objectively had better sound hardware.

I grew up with the Genesis and so I fanboyed that for a long time, but SNES really did have a much better library.

I agree that Sega did have better music though.

Yeah but Sega games (especially Sonic and SoR) had better music.

Sonic 2 and 3+K had absolute jams. And SoR is so good it's worth buying the OST.

Snes had more good games. Genesis had a few games though that snes just couldn't touch. I have streets of rage on pretty much every console I own. I like final fight but it's not as good. I liked the more gritty atmosphere of streets of rage.

The sonic and knuckles cart allowing to insert other sonic games to put knuckles in was mind blowing to me as a kid too.

The hardware can be the best ever, but if the composers either don't give a fuck or suck, they won't make memorable or engaging music.

Not to say the SNES has bad tunes or that they're all forgettable. But if I'm gonna bring up a list of music from 90s games, I'm only going into the SNES catalog for tracks from a few games. Most of my catalog will likely reach out to the Genesis.

I will take a page out of AVGN's book and say that anything that tried to be "16 bit metal/rock" worked better on Genesis, but the SNES has always had the advantage IMO with the orchestral soundtracks on games like FF III and Chrono Trigger. And those are just the big two, if you start getting into the Famicom OST's you open a whole other can of worms.

True. In a similar sense Nintendo has dominated the hand held market even against competitors with better specs for their handhelds. I feel they owe a lot of that to pokemon. But that's where Nintendo was smart. They kept the mainline series on handheld.

Eh, Pokmon helped later on when the GBC/GBA and later DS were out, but Nintendo was slapping Sega and Atari around in the handheld department long before Pokmon.

Genesis does have the superior version of Lemmings, but if you judge it by pretty much any other criteria...

lol, absolutely on that front. They saw the talent and the popularity and capitalized hard on it. Which is a shame. I liked the Game Gear. But, meh.

Genesis has the more memorable tracks, imo. The SNES track, sounds pretty af when it's playing, but not that memorable.

True but I'm talking long term success.

The psp had no business losing to Nintendo. I'll go to my gave thinking it was a better handheld. Most of my games where ports sure but there was something special about playing my favorite console games on a handheld. And crisis core and the dissidia games where just master pieces imo. Metal gear solid peace walker was also a damn good game.

Very unpopular Hot Take; Super Metroids soundtrack and sound design is not good. Muffled as fuck. Everything sounds like it was poorly ripped from another game.

I also don't like SM, ZM is more my speed

I think that was kind of the point lol. Super Metroid was supposed to have an underlying horror element, so the subdued music was probably by design.

Not saying you're 100 % wrong though, the SM OST has never stuck out to me like the soundtracks to the RPG's have.

I like both consoles, and think the SNES edges ahead in a majority of categories, but when it comes to music I think it comes down to personal preference. Genesis had a crisp MIDI sound that was a more direct evolution of the previous gens while SNES had a more orchestrally-capable thing going on.
