This is very Swedish, yes. Everyone did it so it wasnt weird. You played vidya in your friends room while he ate.

I've had that happen before as a kid.

Sometimes you'd get invited to eat with them, but not always.

Even having someone telling me a story about this in first person I do not get it.

Part of it is

guest manners vs home manners and feeling the need to be polite to the outsider
not dealing with an outsider not liking your cooking
size of table where they usually eat
quantity of food prepared.

So the story I heard in first person was that a large Alabama family had a brother playing with his friend. When dinner was called the family sat down at the table and ignored the friend. The friend ran home and told his parents that the other family was eating without inviting him. The parents ran over with their son and father of chowing down family said "Quick everybody get out your toothpicks."

The last is supposed to be a punchline.

I don't think I've ever let someone in my house for more than an hour without insisting on feeding them.

i don't get the joke

I am not sure I get the joke. I suppose that the joke is that head of the family is so intransigent and that he instructed his family to pretend that the meal was over.
