How exactly did this series get so popular?

Power and harem fantasies with a self insert male tends to appeal to neckbeards and Otaku manchildren.

It was the first isekai that really got a real budget in a long time and it's the perfect storm of things that appeal to the tween-teen demographic that makes up the lion's share of the anime community. Edge and the like are unpopular when you get older, but when talking about children that sort of thing is basically the peak of what could be considered cool. Same thing goes with the content as stuff like "life in a video game" is a popular topic for that age group, look at Reboot for an American example, and that wasn't something that was really all that common to see prior to SAO (heck, the fact that most people compare SAO to .Hack kind of shows just how extremely uncommon it is considering the massive gap in time between the two being a thing).

I only know 2 things about that show:

1. MC's big titty sister really wants to fuck her brother >_>
2. They released a movie on Blu-ray after it ran in theaters and said they were adding a 2 second nude scene of one of the female protags and it sold like a trillion% more than the previous bluray lol

You say that like it's a bad thing

the first part of season 1 was amazing. The 2nd half fell off pretty hard, and the sexual assault scenes were really fucked up and should not have even been a thing. Season 2 part 1 was decent. I liked the mystery element. Season 2 part 2 just felt like filler. Season 3 dragged on and on was a snooze fest imo. Season 4 was better. A good conclusion to the season 3 arc. It was a bit silly though. The end though... I didn't know what to expect. That was interesting. If it continues, I am at least curious enough about where they would take it to keep watching.

The Aincrad stuff was really cool, the stuff that followed made me lose interest

The abridged version is a thousand times better with better character growth.

Sorry I love .hack but sign can be really hard to stomach with how boring it is. If you aren't already a fan of hack I cannot fathom a person sitting through the whole thing.

sign is great. not a boring moment in it at all. its certainly not going appeal to lcd anime fans that demand nothing but action and fan service

most people that play gta don't have the issue of having a tenuous at best grasp on reality

All I know about SAO is SAO Fatal Bullet. It is pretty fun, basically an ARPG with guns instead of the typical fantasy weapons (though they do have swords).
