My plans to visit my dad for his birthday this weekend got cancelled when he told me he came down with the shingles

Curious about whether or not I had the shot, I called up my mom and she said I never got it because she kinda "just figured" I'd get the disease eventually as a kid

Are there any risks to getting the shot now as a nearly-30 y/o man? Worth it?

My parents always told me I had chicken pox when I was a baby, but I got tested for antibodies when I was 22 and turns out I never had it.

No issues at all when I got the chicken pox vaccine, it was 2 shots a few weeks apart though.

Got em as a kid, they weren't so bad. My baby brother had massive scabs all over, though.

You can get the vaccine. No risks associated with it. Keep in mind its 2 doses that are given a month apart so your dads shingles would likely be cleared by the time youre vaccinated.

There's a chickenpox vaccine?

Since 1995 in the U.S., like 3 years after I had it as a kid.

I thought it was weird a few years ago never hearing about it or seeing it in animated shows and looked it up.

Did you have it as a kid in the end?

It's certainly can be more serious as an adult, than a child but there are vaccines you can get, but it's not a standard one you give without reason. 2 shots a monthish apart, I believe.

Nope

grew up right after pox parties were a thing, but right before the time when vaccination became widespread

Most people aren't vaccinated against chickenpox.

Most people under the age of 25 do, as the vaccine became part of most pediatricians' vaccine schedule around 1998.

I had chickenpox before the vaccine existed. Still 20+ years away until I'm eligible for the shingles shot. I hope I make it unscathed

I'm glad my parents got me the vaccine when it came out. I remember a bunch of kids getting it in elementary school, but I didn't worry so much since I had gotten the vaccine.

If you've never had chickenpox or the vaccine, I'd recommend getting the vaccine asap. Chickenpox can be more serious for adults than children.

It was a big deal when one of my friends from elementary school got it, but the whole issue kinda dropped off my radar afterward

Probably going to consult my doctor about this whole thing, been living my life up until now without any sort of immunity to it AFAIK

Get the vaccine.

That being said, my son had a mold reaction to his second dose at 18 months. Then he got SHINGLES when he was 12! That sucked for him.
