Last time I went into Wal-Mart there was like 3 people working there and two of them were guarding the door. Corporations are def profiting off of this.

I like them personally. Especially in the past 2 years.

Plus they still have like 2 or 3 workers around them to assist customers. Not sure if it's even putting that many people out of work.

Self checkout takes much longer at grocery stores Ive been to since you have to put each individual item in the bag one at a time so that it can detect the weight before it lets you scan the next item. Walmart does it right, letting you put your items wherever after you scan it.

Full shopping carts should always be faster with a cashier, though, unless you have to wait in a long line.

went to two wally worlds while traveling last year, one had a good 15 checkout lanes with 3 actually manned so I waited about 15 minutes to check out for a good 8-9 items, the 2nd one shut off their self checkout lanes so I waited 20 minutes behind another customer as she dug through to pay for her shit with all cash.
at my home store I have never waited longer than 5 minutes before a lane comes open

Honestly my biggest issue is when people either suck at scanning stuff or you get those assholes that are doing large purchases. Like lady you have a full shopping cart go to a regular cashier.

The only thing I don't like about them is when something goes wrong, and the checkout says "help is coming" and it makes me feel like I'm trapped in a collapsed building being reassured by a rescue robot.

Grocery stores used to do all of this shit for you, and now they don't. Seems like a loss for consumers.

Why pay a cashier when you can have the customers do it for free?

I often end up getting ones that are crappy. And they're fine if you're only getting a few things. Not if you need to do heavy duty shopping. They should just get shoved in the 10 items or less lane.

Why force someone to do the job when it's more convenient to just do yourself? You're not forced to use self-checks. I also imagine it's preferable to people with extreme social anxiety or people who just get anxiety spikes and don't wanna stand there awkwardly

Actually, you are forced to use the self checkouts in certain Wal Mart test stores. That's the future retail and grocery chains are dreaming about. After I've been working all day, the last thing I want to do is scan and bag up a cart full of groceries. I have a family of 5, so I easily drop $200+ on one grocery trip sometimes.

Obviously, if you have one or two items the self checkout is great. I don't think anyone complains about them in that instance.

.....I am only going to say this once in this thread. If you want to blame anyone, blame the moron cashiers who don't show up for work. You as an outsider look at it and say "oh, the self checkouts are taking away from real cashier jobs". Me, as someone who actually worked in those places, "no, we schedule 10 people to show up for work, only 3 actually showed up".

Those self checkouts were installed to lower the amount of work the cashiers who show up for every shift have to do. Because sometimes we had lineups in the dozens if not a hundred people in our lineup. On one of my work days we had 25 people scheduled to work registers. Only 3 people actually showed up to work the entire day.

People would choose to "enjoy the day" or "hang out with friends", rather than work their scheduled shift. And it isn't 100 percent their fault. Corporations are just as much at fault for this. They don't fire anyone to set an example, and many times they reschedule or ignore preset schedules just to fill voids in shifts. I know that one day one of the managers got pissed off at me for my coworker going home at 10 pm, instead of his scheduled 10:30 pm. The issue wasn't with him. He was scheduled to work until 10 pm, they changed his schedule overnight without telling him.

It's like.... don't get pissed off at me because you guys suck at telling your employees that the shift has changed, or even talking to them in general.

They were pretty annoying when they were forcing you to use the scale, but pretty much every place I've been to no longer has that requirement. Much quicker now, especially places that have a detachable scanner.
