The 800 pound gorilla in the Gulf of Mexico that could supercharge hurricanes this season

Forecasters expect a busy 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, with a 65 percent chance of an above-average season. Theres also a wildcard in the mix that raises the risk of more severe storms in the Gulf of Mexico this year.

Between 14 to 21 tropical storms could grow powerful enough to be named this season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said in its season outlook briefing, which was released today. The average Atlantic hurricane season, which starts on June 1st, typically has about 14 named storms. Another prominent forecast from Colorado State University predicted 19 named storms this year.

NOAA expects six to 10 stormsto strengthen into hurricanes. NOAA also forecast between three to six major hurricanes, ranked as a Category 3 or higher with wind speeds of at least 111 miles per hour.

Theres also a troubling development in the Gulf of Mexico. The Loop Current, a current of warm water, has moved surprisingly far north for this time of year. The current, which flows like a river within the sea, brings warmer water from the Caribbean to typically cooler waters closer to the US Gulf Coast. Thats especially worrying news for the seasonsince hurricanes feed off heat energy.
Its higher octane fuel, says University of Miami oceanography professor Nick Shay. Its the 800 pound gorilla in the Gulf.

Electric cars won't stop climate change. The only way cars can help is if we drastically reduce our reliance on them, get most of them off the roads, and switch to public transportation powered by cleaner, renewable sources.

So many home insurance companies have stopped doing business altogether in Louisiana and the ones that did stay doubled or tripled their premiums and stopped offering any wind deductibles under 2% of the dwelling coverage because of the last 2 seasons.

Another bad season this year and I shudder to think what's going to happen. Home ownership is difficult enough but if people are paying $10k per year on top of it just for bare minimum home insurance with high deductibles it's gonna get really bad. Doesn't help that car insurance in this state is also the 2nd highest in the country on top of high gas and car prices.

No one thing will stop climate change. Electric cars are one thing that you can actually buy yourself to make a difference though. Cities aren't going to be rebuilt with public transport in mind. They just aren't.

Tell that to the people peddling inefficient solutions as the panacea.

Cleaner vehicles that require more and more dirty infrastructure are a one step forward, two steps back situation, so that illusion of difference is negligible for any purpose other than making us feel like we did something.

Of course cities aren't going to be rebuilt with public transportation but you don't need to tell anyone we aren't actually ever going to do what's necessary. That is getting more and more obvious by the day.

Well unfortunately what's really necessary is a drastic reduction in the human population, everything else is a band-aid fix that just buys a little more time. But you can't mention certain mathematical realities or else you're a nazi, or something.
